LOUISE JONES Interior designer Complete with a white picket fence and climbing roses, the home of interior designer Louise Jones in south London is more akin to a country cottage than an urban residence – both inside and out (from page 128). This is much to do with her knack for creating comfortable rooms by sourcing antique furniture – no distressed fnishes here – and mixing it with modern fabrics and all the conveniences required of this century. ‘I started thinking about interiors the day I started working as an accountant,’ she says. It can only be a good sign if your work’s found its way into the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Designers Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard, of Fredrikson Stallard, have been suitably lionised. Hidden in the vaults of the V&A, away from public view, are two of their pieces. The first is ‘Table #1’, also called ‘The Log Table’, a low table made from quartered sections of silver-birch tree trunks bound by a steel strap. The second is their ‘Pyrenees Sofa’, an undulating mound of flocked polyurethane foam that mimics a mountain landscape. The design duo have been creating beautiful, sculptural objects since they met two decades ago, although it wasn’t until 2005 that they set up their studio. In brief In the late seventeenth century, William Warner worked as a scarlet dyer in London. His descendant, Benjamin Warner, pictured above, started a fabric-design firm in 1857, later bringing on board his sons Alfred and Frank, and signalling the birth of Warner & Sons. Within the myriad drawers of the Warner Textile Archive in Essex lies a treasure trove of inspiration. Set up to record the history of the fabric company Warner & Sons from its arrival at New Mills in Braintree in 1895 to when it stopped manufacturing there in 1971, the archive holds over 60,000 fabric samples. Some were produced by Warner & Sons and others collected by the company’s owners and designers. Together they document almost 500 years of textile design.
