editor’s letter

Walking out of trend forecaster Li Edelkoort’s presentation on a Saturday morning in Cape Town a few weeks ago, I knew one thing for sure: I had to rush to my computer or get to a notepad to scribble down a few things I’d heard as quickly as possible. I’m often in two minds when attending Li’s talks, because they are always sensitively executed with amazing visuals, considered text and, lately, great songs and audio that she layers on top. So I had decided not to make notes on my phone, and instead tried to listen to and focus on her – but then I found myself starting to panic when I couldn’t instantly remember the first section of her speech in full. Li’s talk this year was centred on key…

NATALIE ROOS Having spent eight years as a K-TV presenter and a few years at DStv’s Afrikaans music channel MK, Natalie started her blog, Tails of a Mermaid, in 2010. When she’s not discovering things to blog about, she works as a freelance digital specialist, which is why she recently served as our acting digital editor. What does your ideal kitchen have in it? A gas stove, a big dining table and sharp knives. Which three words best describe your home? Cats, light, safe. What’s your favourite thing about autumn? The sunsets. It’s the best time of the year to watch the sky turn pink. If money were no object, what would you treat yourself to? Endless travels. And a LOT of massages. What’s your earliest design-related memory? Discovering the beauty of…

food,glorious food

It’s a familiar scene: a child climbs on a chair to get on top of a kitchen counter and reaches for a treat he’s not meant to take. Climbing on that chair to eat peanut butter by the spoonful is one of my earliest memories of my grandmother’s kitchen… that, and the way my grandfather used to roast corn on the wood-burning stove. Nearly four decades later, you can still catch me in the kitchen eating peanut butter by the spoonful – #nosugarnosalt and preferably organic. I also put it on everything. Except bread, because who still eats bread? For breakfast, it’s two tablespoons with honey in a bowl of oats; at dinnertime, very little compares to peanut butter sauce with chicken; and as a snack, I smear it on a…

meeting mr chandler

He’s an artist, curator, illustrator and the owner of Cape Town’s Chandler House and its Voorkamer Gallery – and we love Michael Chandler’s work. As soon as we began to discuss this year’s Kitchen Issue, we knew that Michael (pictured right with one of his handpainted tile projects) would be the ideal collaborator for us. ‘I think the one aspect I love about blue and white ceramics the most – apart from the immediate positive stimulation they give me – is their rich and complex history,’ says Michael. ‘Thought to have originated in Islamic decoration, the technology of painting ceramics with cobalt spread to Asia and Europe, where each culture used the method in its own way,’ he says. ‘The Portuguese azulejo tradition and Chinese tableware are only two branches of the…
