THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL CITY I TRAVELLED TO WAS SPECTACULAR PARIS. I’VE SINCE TRAVELLED TO MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD, BUT THAT FIRST TRIP TO PARIS REMAINS THE MOST MAGICAL. Through these titles I was able to explore the world vicariously and so began a lifelong love of travel – and the beginning of a long to-do…

KHANYA MZONGWANA is a chef, food stylist, writer, avid foodgrammer and eater born and bred in Port Elizabeth. She co-hosts a dinner in Pretoria every month with her partner at their pop-up restaurant Off the Wall (page 104). If money were no object, what would your ultimate holiday destination be? A tie between Osaka and Antarctica. And what’s your all-time worst destination? Sorry, Mbombela! What are your packing essentials? A hat, a bright lip colour and headphones. Monument you want to take a selfie in front of? The medieval Hindu and Jain temples of Khajuraho. Do you nick bath products from hotels? Not anymore. I’m a changed woman. To eat the in-flight food or not? It’s never a good idea – make sure you have something to eat before you board.…

‘THERE’S A SENSE OF COMFORT AND HARMONY BETWEEN OLD AND NEW.’ For many years Etienne Hanekom was responsible for creating pages just like these. But as an art director for a design magazine, Etienne soon found himself longing to be on the other side of the lens, turning styled decor shoots into real rooms. ‘Working on a magazine started to frustrate me,’ he says. ‘I wanted to create actual spaces.’ The 33-year-old stylist turned his hand to the interiors of some of Cape Town’s best-known spots, working his special kind of dramatic aesthetic into their design language. ‘My penchant is for moody, dark spaces filled with quirky elements,’ says Etienne. Stellenbosch’s Majeka House, for example, got an injection of his bent for opulence, complete with sumptuous textures, natural materials and touches of…

BLUE ‘BECOMES A TRUE REFLECTION OF MODERN REFINEMENT. IT REPRESENTS AN EASE THAT COMES WITH THE UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE OF COOL AND CRISP FRESHNESS THAT IS EFFORTLESS, NEAT AND PURE.’ - LUKHANYO MDINGI, FASHION DESIGNER OCHRE ‘FOR ME, IT'S THE ONE COLOUR THAT CAN BE ADDED TO ALMOST EVERY PALETTE, USUALLY ROUNDING OUT THE LOOK. IT ADDS A PUNCH OF SOUL, DEPTH AND RICHNESS TO ANY SPACE, AT ONCE REFERENCING OLD-WORLD ROMANCE AND CHARM, NOSTALGIA FOR TIMES LONG GONE AND LAZY AFTERNOONS SPENT BY THE SEA. IF I COULD DRESS THE WORLD IN OCHRE, I CERTAINLY WOULD.’ - CHARL EDWARDS, ART DIRECTOR AND STYLIST OATMEAL ‘THE HONESTY OF OATMEAL – COMFORTING, SERENE, UNCHALLENGING – ADDS TO ITS PERENNIAL CHARM. IT’S CASHMERE AND COARSE LINEN, IT’S UNCOMPLICATED AND SERENE – A PERFECT GREIGE PALETTE FOUNDATION.’ - MAIRA KOUTSOUDAKIS, FOUNDER OF…
