Breathe in, and out… In, and out… I’ve been more conscious of these simple words, and actions, of late. As I write this, we’re on deadline for the issue you’re holding in your hands. To keep it together, I’ve physically adopted this comforting ritual of consciously breathing in, and out, to ease the stress and calm my mind. Breathe in, and out… In, and out… It’s obviously not always a forced exercise. Just a few weeks ago, I found myself on a stretch of sand on an island off the coast of Mozambique (what deadline?). For someone who spent their entire school career as a boarder, thoughts of going home at the end of each term quickly became like dreams of a utopia. After lights out, I would lie in my dormitory bed plotting the order of events that would unfold upon arrival at home. First, hide the TV remote from older brother; second, bake a batch of (the most delicious) biscuits; and lastly, take a long, lavender-scented bath. But before journeying to the wonderland called home, my family would often take a quick trip to Durban from Mooi River, where I spent my primary-school years. I remember Andrea Bocelli’s voice lulling me to sleep as we meandered through the mountains. Once in Durban, our days would be packed with theme-park rides, dolphin shows and hours…
