In a far less dramatic way, I think I’m the same. When I was about six years old, my parents took our family on a trip to Durban…

people of the south

THE RELATIONSHIPS WE FOSTER WITH URBAN STRUCTURES ARE OFTEN SUBCONSCIOUS – YET INTIMATE. AND MOST OF US WOULD BE HARD-PRESSED TO DESCRIBE JOBURG’S ARCHITECTURAL VERNACULAR. About 15 years ago, I moved with my partner Marcos into his modest 1960s apartment block in Consolação, a suburb in the endless muddle of high-rise geometry that comprises the 20-million-strong megalopolis of São Paulo. I don’t recall seeing a coconut palm, bikini or statue of Christ peering down from heaven, but rather, staggering along the winding vertical streets, I was unnerved by a mystical, fierce sense of déjà vu. What could be familiar about the packs of hounds transfixed by slow-rolling roadside rotisseries? Or the occasional fireworks, drug-lord code for ‘police, you just missed another major shipment’? How on earth could I have been here…
