the luxury of time

‘RIGHT NOW, TIME SEEMS TO BE THE THING I’M CHASING THE MOST AND IT’S SOMETHING I DESPERATELY WISH I COULD BUY MORE OF.’ Recently, I was part of a panel discussion talking about the idea of luxury for perhaps one of the most luxurious brands of them all, The Rug Company. This panel included charismatic fashion designers Malcolm and Christiaan from KLûK CGDT and South African design champion Cathy O’Clery. And, while the discussion was thought-provoking, relevant and engaging, I battled with the topic. Luxury is such a loaded concept that I find it difficult to wrap my head around it – especially living in South Africa in 2016 and in the context of such challenges as #FeesMustFall (which at the time of writing has UCT students and academics protesting outside…

from the art director

When I came in as the new Art Director at House and Leisure, picking up the reins from a great predecessor and being set the job of refreshing the magazine’s design was quite a daunting task. And given the theme of this issue – luxury – in the world of ever-looming magazine deadlines, the irony was palpable. My outlook on redesigns, in general, has always been ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. That, coupled with the idea of ‘less is more’, is exactly what we had in the back of our minds throughout this redesign process. Between myself, Tiaan and the team, we wanted to give our readers a little bit more breathing room and to allow the content, photography and words to speak for themselves. Considering House and Leisure’s rich…

indulge me from marbled mansions to houses filled with memories and joy, what constitutes a luxurious home, asks vanessa raphaely

A DECENT READING LAMP, A PILE OF BOOKS AND A GLASS OF RED WINE PLACED PERFECTLY NEXT TO A SOFA THAT PERFECTLY FITS MY BODY – THAT’S LUXURY. My first job in journalism was as a lowly assistant to a woman who wrote a weekly feature called ‘At home with…’ for a middle-market UK Sunday newspaper. My task was to research what the contents of celebrities’ houses cost. It was the late 1980s (the decade that taste sidestepped) and many of the homes we featured were glorious temples to the most heinous excesses money could buy. Some of the more pretentious celebrities featured (film directors, gallerists, arrivistes…) believed that ‘living well’ meant to live with no clutter, which meant no books, cooking utensils, children or (the horror!) children’s toys on display. Those…
