In our recent winter issue, I wrote about my 10 days of silence, and this letter is literally the last thing I am doing before I pack my suitcase to go and be silent again. Some people start their year with resolutions, new projects and lots of energy, but apparently I can’t last that long. Like a Japanese kintsugi piece, I need to repair the cracks at more regular intervals. Of all the Eastern art forms – and the various philosophies behind them – this golden mending is my favourite. Not just because the ceramics are more beautiful than they were before they broke, but also because they remind us that we can come back stronger after a setback.
