the kruger chronicles

It was Tom Hanks’ Forest Gump character who said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” How prophetic and true his words have proven to be. You just never know what life is going to dish out next. Like our recent trip around the borders of South Africa, in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. We started the trip off in the Kruger National Park, entering through the Pafuri Gate, and driving all the way through the park in one go, to exit at Crocodile Bridge. I remember visiting the park as a primary school lad with my family. And we’d drive the entire day and see 2 412 impala – and not a single other animal. Whatsoever. Or that’s what it seemed like when I was…

risk and responsibility

Please supply your postal address, in case you win a prize. WINNING LETTER I was reading Jürgen Höntsch’s letter in the February 2018 issue with interest, as I have also owned a silver Jeep Cherokee (KJ) 2.8 CRD. They really can go anywhere. I got caught up in the adventure as the letter described the amazing places Jürgen visited. I certainly was not prepared for his car wash experience! That kind of thing can destroy the holiday feeling very quickly indeed. While I understand the ‘own risk’ policy, surely there must be some kind of responsibility from the car wash owner? An employee caused the damage to the Jeep, does that not make the…

setting the record straight

We welcome your views Mitsubishi’s Pajeros are icons in their own right and your Pajero Sport 2014 model is well within that scope, Clive. Your comment, however, that the new Pajero Sport is ‘not far off the old model’ couldn’t be further from the truth. Please do yourself a favour and go for a test drive, you’ll feel the difference straight away. I have been looking for a replacement for my highly customised 4×4 SUV for the past two years. This time round an a/t was non-negotiable and a diesel still the preferred option. It had to be a vehicle where good off-road performance was not based on expensive aftermarket fitments. To sum it up, the vehicle had to be a more comfortable 4×4 SUV that suits my lifestyle, without compromising off-road…

This is it: 2-litre turbodiesel with 157kW/500Nm and 10-speed auto box, Fox racing suspension, bespoke interior. Ettiene Steyn Ford Raptor… with milk teeth. Come on Ford. Shane Redman Can you imagine the gearbox problems with 10 speeds working overtime to keep this girly motor on the button? The 2.2 is already a problem, now add a hectic gearbox. Here I was hoping for the V8. Lloyd McMaster People are comparing this to a luxury bakkie with slightly more power. This thing is made to go fast off-road. It will make a V6 Amarok look like it’s looking for parking on a dirt…

road tripping

I am a regular driver on the road from Johannesburg and its surrounds to Gaborone. There are many bad drivers in Botswana but in South Africa there are clearly a lot of angry drivers, thoughtless drivers, suicidal drivers and the plainly insane. Drivers pull up behind you while you are driving at (and sometimes slightly above) the speed limit and flash their lights for you to get out of their way, instead of waiting for a safe place and the right conditions to overtake. Clearly, they consider their lives to be more important than yours. What makes it worse is this notion that the emergency lane is a driving lane, which it is not. Laws for vehicular homicide and manslaughter ought to be passed, with sentences as stiff as those for any…

trailer tare weights

If you want to add real value to the local industry, I’d highlight the point that most manufacturers of camping trailers are frugal with their weights by a substantial margin. Most quote the bare minimum weight as a tare, and focusing on the manufacturers’ tare weights could be doing your readers a disservice. It’s time that motoring journalists in this market tackle this issue head-on. When a manufacturer incorrectly states the tare, it could be misleading: if a brand says their tare is 500kg and the client loads 800kg, the driver should theoretically be on 1 300kgs, but in fact he could be 400-500kgs heavier. Other than decreasing his road safety, consider that the recommended tow limit for some vehicles is also lower than the permissible legal tow limit and in both instances,…
