welcome 2017

Welcome to 2017. Wishing you all a healthy, happy and abundant year. Speaking of happiness, the beginning of a new year is always a good time to ask the question: “Are you happy?” And if you’re not, what truly, honestly, is standing in the way of your being happy? The start of a new year symbolically nudges us to rethink our lives and our year ahead. And there’s simply no time like now! I love these sage words from Paulo Coelho: “One day, you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. DO IT NOW.” And he is absolutely right. So, if you do anything this year, forget the many New Year’s resolutions that are set in the best of spirits in the festive…

1 WELLNESS E-CIGARETTE SMOKING COULD HAVE CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS A new study indicates that e-cigarette smoking can have a substantial effect on young smokers’ health, even if they never become tobacco smokers. Rob McConnell, the lead author of the study, published in the American Thoracic Society’s Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care, found an association between the use of e-cigarettes and a persistent cough, bronchitis and congestion or phlegm in young smokers. The study found that, when compared to a control group of individuals who had never tried e-cigarettes, users were at 85% greater risk of experiencing respiratory symptoms. “E-cigarettes are known to deliver chemicals toxic to the lungs, including oxidant metals, glycerol vapour, diketone flavouring compounds and nicotine,” says McConnell. “However, there has been little study on the chronic health effects of e-cigarettes.…

what s in your food?

INGREDIENT NAME: SODIUM BENZOATE FOUND IN: ACIDIC FOODS AND BEVERAGES WHAT IS SODIUM BENZOATE? Sodium benzoate is a preservative used to prevent food from moulding. It is usually used in acidic foods and beverages, such as pickles, salad dressing, fruit juices and soft drinks. An unfortunate side-effect occurs when sodium benzoate is mixed with ascorbic acid (vitamin C): it turns into benzene, a known carcinogen and DNA-damager. When tested by the FDA, most beverages that contained both ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate had benzene levels that were below those considered dangerous for consumption by the World Health Organization. Most of the beverages that tested higher have been reformulated, and subsequently tested below the safety limit. The rate at which benzene is formed differs according to light and heat exposure, as well as the period of…
