You might want to avoid drinking your first cup of coffee of the day as soon as you wake up to avoid a spike in cortisol, the stress hormone, says Dr Cynthia Geyer, medical director at Canyon Ranch Lenox in Massachusetts. ‘Cortisol has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels naturally occurring 30–40 minutes after awakening. Caffeine increases cortisol and adrenaline independently, and timing consumption with the naturally occurring higher morning levels may lead to a heightened stress response.’ Dr Geyer recommends drinking your first coffee about 3 hours after waking up.…

Experts agree that a couple of yoga sessions a week may help to ease depression. Some people who don’t respond to traditional treatments might do well with yoga because, unlike antidepressants, yoga and deep breathing target the autonomic nervous system, says Dr Chris C Streeter, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine. ‘If your autonomic nervous system is balanced out, then the rest of the brain works better,’ she says. Research shows that 40% of people on antidepressants do not recover fully from depression, which puts them at increased risk of relapse. ‘Instead of adding another drug, I would argue that yoga is something you can add to the treatment regimen that might help.’ More research is needed to determine how yoga stacks up against other…
