macos catalina: everything you should know

From the desert to the coast: macOS Mojave has given way to the next major version of the Mac operating system, called Catalina. Revealed during Apple’s 2019 WWDC keynote in June, Catalina features some major new features that continues to move macOS forward. Here we look at when it will be released, which Macs are compatible, and much more. When will Catalina be released? This is an easy one. It’s out now. How can I get it? Apple’s latest OS available is through the Mac App Store. The download is several gigabytes in size, and installation will take several minutes, so use a reliable Internet connection and be aware that you won’t be able to use you Mac for anything else during the installation. macos catalina: 7 features you should try first

With the release of the latest version of macOS, Apple introduces a slew of new features. You should (and will) try them all, of course, but where should you start? Well, we’ve been using the Catalina betas, so we have ideas on which new features you should try first. These are the major new features that you’ll want to start with in the macOS update. 1. Music, Podcast, and TV apps The iTunes app is no more in Catalina – it was an app that had too much going on, and Apple has wisely broken it up into Music, Podcasts, and TV. You now manage the respective media in each app, and if you connect your iOS device to your Mac, you use these apps to coordinate your syncs. 2. Sidecar: Use your…

how to create a bootable catalina installer drive

An external drive that you can use as an installer for macOS Catalina is a handy thing to have. If you have multiple Macs to upgrade, it’s a lot more efficient to plug in the USB installer drive and run the installer than to log into the App Store, download the 6.5GB OS installer, and then run it. In this article I’ll go over the different ways you can create a bootable Catalina installation drive. But before I start, I’ll go over the items you’ll need and how to get them. Get an external drive and maybe an adaptor The macOS Catalina installer software is nearly 6.5GB, so you need a USB external drive that can hold that much data. The drive can be a thumb drive, hard drive, or SSD. If you…

find out if your mac’s software is 32- or 64-bit

MacOS 10.14 Mojave, the version of the Mac operating system before Catalina, is the last one to support 32-bit software. With Catalina, only 64-bit software will be supported. Now that it’s here, you need to do a bit more than usual to prepare your Mac. You need to make sure your apps are 64-bit versions. If a program is a 32-bit version, it will not work. Apple actually started to warn people about the change with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. If you launch a 32-bit app in this OS, an alert pops up to tell you that it needs to be updated. The alert appears only once in High Sierra and in Mojave, and it appears every 30 days. If you can’t recall whether an app needs to be upgraded or not,…

how to use the new features in safari 13

Safari is probably the most frequently used app in macOS. Fortunately, with the upgrade to Catalina, Safari gets a few helpful new features. Here’s a look. Start page The start page has a new way to help you get to the websites you want to visit. It still shows Favourites and Frequently Visited websites as in previous versions, but now there’s a Siri Suggestions section that lists recently-visited sites, Reading List links, iCloud Tabs, links sent to you via Messages, and more. Tab switching When you type in a URL, if that website is already open in another tab, Safari will display the option to switch to that particular tab. Not only should this help cut down on the number of open tabs that you have, it can also help you find the tab…

iphone 11

RATING: Price: £729 (inc VAT) from fave.co/35jOdmT Last year, Apple introduced the iPhone XR (£629 from fave.co/30T3RSV) as the ‘affordable’ offering in its new iPhone line-up. We liked the XR a lot, and we even said that it might be the best iPhone Apple has ever made. The follow-up to the XR is the new iPhone 11, and the fact that Apple decided to bless this model with the ‘iPhone 11’ title – and not call it something like the iPhone 11R – says a lot about where the company positions the phone. But can this phone carry the burden of being known as the iPhone 11? As a matter of fact, it can. The satisfying speed boost, dual camera setup, and long battery life combine to make the iPhone 11 even better…
