IN THIS ISSUE We have lots of great content in this issue. First, we have a Flight Report from Ralph Esposito for an incredible turbo-prop powered T-27 Tucano from Juniaer Modelismo. We also have a great construction article for a fun-scale profile Zero by Dick Sarpolus. It’s quick and easy to build with readily available foam wings (you can order full-size plans at AirAgeStore.com). We also have a close-up look at an amazing giant-scale aerobatic Stearman that our buddy Curtis Switzer has flown at many events. Curtis answers all our questions in this month’s five-page Gallery. INTRO TO AEROBATICS Here in the Northeast, as the cold weather subsides, RC pilots are making ready for the upcoming flying season. It’s a perfect time to get to the flying field and learn to fly. If…

J-3 CUB Nigel Watson, Martinez, California Nigel built this 76.5-inch-span, Anniversary Edition Piper J3 Cub from a Carl Goldberg kit. The balsa and ply model was designed to fly with a .40 size 2-stroke, but Nigel converted it to electric with a Suppo A4120/6 motor, an 80A speed control, a 4S 4000mAh LiPo, and an APC 13x8E propeller. Nigel also added flaps and a gyro to smooth out any turbulence on those windier days. The grin on his face is for having just completed a successful maiden flight. Nigel says the Cub is a gentle flier and usually cruises the skies above the Diablo Valley Radio Controllers’ runway in the hills above Pittsburg, California. DORNIER MERKUR Scott Kruize, Tukwila, Washington This unusual RC model of the 1921 airliner is an original design and 1/24-scale. Scott…

DECAL ALIGNMENT When you’re ready to apply your chosen aircraft markings, it can be hard to properly position and align the decals. I have found that using the sticky side of office notes works great! Use a sharp pair of scissors, make a ruler out of the sticky side (which contours to most surfaces) and you’re on your way to a very sharply dressed plane with almost perfect alignment! John Wolfe, email THROTTLE BELLCRANK With many gasoline-powered engines, the position of the carburetor requires either a thin flexible cable pushrod to move the throttle arm or the installation of a carburetor adaptor block to reposition the arm so a straight-run pushrod can be used. A much simpler method that produces less play than the cable is to use a 90-degree belcrank. I drill a…

coachella valley jet jam

It was an event which almost wasn’t. For years, the Coachella Valley Radio Control Club in Thermal, California has hosted its annual Jet Jam in February. The specter of quarantine closures in California cast a pall on the 2021 event. Fortunately, that did not happen with the lifting of restrictions just prior to the 18th annual event. Club officers did a stellar job of scrambling together a show after the restrictions were lifted; the only casualty was a lack of raffle prizes. The Jet Jam is a big deal in a remote location some 25 miles southeast of Palm Springs. It draws participants of all ages from across the west to enjoy the mild winter weather and to fly everything from electric ducted fans to giant scale turbines at an AMA…
