New research has found that the different ways in which mums and dads talk to their babies and preschool children are both important in helping little ones learn language and speech patterns. While mothers often use ‘babytalk’, fathers tend to speak to tots as if they are small adults. The ‘coochy-coo’ female approach – with its attention-catching rhythm – attracts and engages babies, but dad’s more grown-up tone provides a vital ‘bridge’ to the outside world, and engages little ones in a different way. ‘The approaches of both parents are complementary to their children’s language learning,’ says Professor Mark VanDam, of Washington State University, who conducted the research.…
