welcome

Hello! It can’t be a coincidence that Valentine’s Day is in February, when all we want to do is stay home, keep warm and snuggle up on the sofa with the people we love the most. I’ve decided to stop feeling guilty about not getting out and about as much as I probably should with the kids, and just embrace cosy instead. And I highly recommend it! I can now whip up a living-room den in seconds with a blanket and pegs, I know just how many seconds it takes to microwave a mug of milk to make not-too-hot hot chocolate, and I can recite whole pages of The Gruffalo at will. And there’s lots in this month’s M&B to help you and your little family feel all loved up, too. Find…

WORDS EMILY THORPE Get busy! New research* has revealed that babies who are less active get less sleep. The findings suggest that even for six-month-olds, physical activity – such as tummy time several times a day – helps promote healthy weight gain, which influences sleep. So, next time you play with your tot on his mat, be reassured that not only are you bonding and developing his motor skills, you might just both benefit from a bit more kip, too. We asked you… What stage did you look forward to most with your baby? Sleeping through the night 59% Talking 41% Weaning 0% Walking 0% 38% of mums would give up wine for a good night’s sleep! Too cute! Bennie the Bear is the latest adorable addition to The Gro Company family, and we think he’s super-cuddly. From £10.99, gro-store.com Does your…

join our # mum tribe

Here at Mother&Baby HQ, we’ve been getting pretty tired of seeing all those too-good-to-be-true family photos on social, so we thought we’d gather all of us real mums together, and do something about it! #mumtribe is where real mums like you and us get together to share what life is really like as a mum. Every day,#mumtribe invites mums to share a photo of a parenting moment. It might be a teeny-tiny thing that makes you smile – like your baby’s cute just-woke-up yawn. It might be a mini mum-win – like that little bit of carpet you can still see beneath all the scattered toys. It might be perfectly normal stuff – like a fading stretchmark. Or it could be one of those blow-your-mind moments like the look your tot…

Growing up, it seemed to me that the most important kind of love was the one shared between a couple – the kind of love that was filled with romance that could whisk you off your feet and make you feel like you were floating on air. Now I’m a mum, I realise I completely overlooked the weighted love that exists between parents and their children, and within a family. I was lucky that I never had to question the bond between me and my siblings, or me and my parents – even when they separated. We kids were their focus and they poured so much into us, despite their own relationship not going the way they’d planned. Maternal love might be different from the love you have for a partner,…

disco duck ducklings class, letchworth

‘We’ve been coming since Phoebe was six months old and she now knows the routine by heart.’ Lian and Phoebe ‘Even if your baby is happier staying on your lap, go to a class – there’s lots for him to watch.’ Leanne and Nylah ‘The classes have helped Ella grow in confidence, and now she runs around and joins in.’ Amanda and Ella ‘I love watching George’s little face light up when he’s enjoying the class!’ Lianne and George ‘Don’t go in with any expectations – some weeks your child will be the life and soul, but the next week he won’t!’ Casey and Finley disco-duck.co.uk…

bump art

My pregnancy proved to be the perfect opportunity for my husband, Paul, to show off his creative streak. Face paints transformed my bump into cheerful cartoon fruits and vegetables, used as a gauge to estimate baby’s size according to the number of weeks pregnant I was. It was a fun thing to do and also a very bonding experience, as our baby would often be wriggling or stretching in response. Not many artists have to contend with a moving canvas! Of course, when I went overdue and we had run out of fresh produce ideas, we just had to go with the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland – by this point my sticky-out belly button provided a perfect bunny nose! Our healthy, happy, baby boy, Joseph, was born on…
