welcome

Hello! Ooh, did someone say Christmas?! Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is already being played on repeat in our house, and we’ve been eating mince pies for weeks. Too early to be getting excited for Christmas? Not at all – it’s the best-ever excuse to ramp up the family fun, so let’s get started! The sensory activities on page 46 are just lovely, and a fab way to get festive with your tot, however young he is. Invite your baby-group friends round to share Annabel Karmel’s scrummy party food (find the easy-make recipes on page 98). And be inspired by the M&B mums sharing their quirky Christmas traditions on page 92. Don’t worry it that all sounds like too much fun for your tot – the tricks on page 62 will settle the…

snuggle up

Those first cuddles with your newborn are magical, and now a study has found that when your partner holds his child on the day of birth, there can be a lasting impact. The research showed that dads whose cortisol levels were elevated while they held their baby (both clothed and skin-to-skin) were more likely to be involved in caring for, and playing with, their child in the first few months. It’s thought that the raised cortisol helps dads become more vigilant and responsive. Bring on the cuddles! With so much to discuss about your new baby at your six-week postnatal check-up, sometimes there just isn’t enough time to cosider how you’re feeling. As part of its Hidden Half campaign, the NCT has called for more funding so new mums receive a…

join our #mum tribe

# mumtribe is where real mums like you and us get together to share what life is really like as a mum! Here at M&B HQ, we’ve been getting pretty tired of seeing all those too-good-to-be-true family photos on social, so we thought we’d gather all of us real mums together, do something about it, and have some fun at the same time! Every day,# mumtribe invites mums to share a photo of a parenting moment. It might be a teeny-tiny thing that makes you smile – like your baby’s cute yawn. It might be a mini mum-win – like that little bit of carpet you can still see beneath all the scattered toys. It might be perfectly normal stuff – like a fading stretchmark. Or it could be one of…

m&b’s fave mum! giovanna fletcher

If you know anything about the Fletcher family, you’ll know we love Christmas. I once gave Tom Christmas Day for his birthday in July (we got the tree down from the loft, popped on The Snowman and baked minced pies before our mates came over for an afternoon of indulgence and board games). And we regularly upgrade a standard Sunday roast to a full-on Christmas dinner complete with pigs in blankets, Brussels sprouts and a Christmas pudding. We do have a rule that we aren’t allowed to listen to Christmas songs until Halloween and Bonfire night are done and dusted – but on 6 November, you can guarantee we’ll be tucking into our Cheerios while Michael Bublé is crooning along in the background! I thought it would be fun to share…

sisters with misters

A new baby is always a special addition to a family, but we’ve had an extra-special year, with three sisters having three sons in 12 months! I’m on the right with my son Fox, born May 2017; in the centre is my sister, Nikki, with her son Spike, born in November 2017; and on the left is my sister, Heather, with her son Chase, born April 2018. It’s been fantastic to have so much sisterly support as we start our journeys as mums together, and I love sharing tips I read in Mother&Baby magazine with them. We’re so looking forward to watching this trio of cousins grow up together! JOANNA BATEMAN, WIRRAL Joanna wins the Discovery Max Stroller from Ickle Bubba, worth £159. Suitable from birth up to four years, and just…

over to you...

Baby’s best friend I know it’s slightly different from your normal baby pictures, but here’s my first (fur!) baby, Poppy, getting some quality time with my bump. She’s become so protective and gentle. EMMA CARR, GLASGLOW This is my little baby boy Freddie, 11 months, at my cousin’s wedding. He looks extra cute in his suit! Donna Lines, via email After a week’s stay in NICU after she was born, I can’t believe our cheeky little madam is six months old already and has started on the weaning journey. Sienna loves her food – prune is definitely her favourite so far! Carla Yarrow, Ruislip Mine, Mummy! Here’s Sienna when she spotted my ice cream and was very eager to get her hands on it! How could I possibly resist? VICKY HALL, LEAMINGTON SPA Arthur, 19 months, is such a…
