Hello! Hooray! 2019 is here and I can’t help daydreaming about all the fun family stuff I want to pack into this year. I love taking a mini life-pause in January to lift my focus from the everyday chaos and look forwards at the whole year stretching out in front of me, and plot an intended, if overly-hopeful course. I’m thinking holidays, happy kids, and handling the pandemonium of life on my parenting hamster wheel a little better! We’ve got all sorts of expert help to get your 2019 off to a great start in this issue of Mother&Baby. Our fab sleep expert, Lucy Wolfe, shares some smart steps to get all the family sleeping better on page 57. You’ll find the 10 New Year’s resolutions your tot would like you to…

Good talkÉ Whether it’s ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ your tot utters first, hearing your baby speak is an exciting milestone we mums look forward to. And a new study has found that it’s not what you say to your youngster that supports his language development but the way you say it. The research found that parents who spoke to their child with elongated vowels and exaggerated tones, known as parentese, improved the language skills of their infant more over time compared to parents who didn’t. Researchers believe that parentese helps your baby tune into you and motivates her to talk back. giovanna fletcher

It was only a couple of days into 2018 when I found out I was pregnant. This changed quite a few of the plans for the year ahead – not only work ones (books were pushed back, Tom had to take my place on a charity trek, and I had to say no to things I’d been planning on doing), but also family plans. Like when we’d be able to go on a family holiday, what car we were driving (I had no idea you can’t get three ISOFIX seats in a row in most cars) and smaller, almost laughable things around the house, like being stuck with the stairgates for another couple of years! Falling pregnant also made me look at my life/work balance and how much external pressure I…

join our #mumtribe

Here at M&B HQ, we’ve been getting pretty tired of seeing all those too-good-to-be-true family photos on social, so we thought we’d gather all of us real mums together, and do something about it! # mumtribe is where real mums like you and us get together to share what life is really like as a mum. Every day,# mumtribe invites mums to share a photo of a parenting moment. It might be a teeny-tiny thing that makes you smile – like your baby’s cute yawn. It might be a mini mum-win – like that little bit of carpet you can still see beneath all the scattered toys. It might be perfectly normal stuff – like a fading stretchmark. Or it could be one of those blow-your-mind moments like the look your…

ross to the rescue

My eight-month-old Ross has been growing up far too quickly recently. He’s been my rock, as he came at a time when my dad was battling cancer. We lost Dad and my nan in the space of three days, but Ross has been my family’s light. I never thought at 21 I’d lose my dad but gain a wonderful, beautiful son. I love him so much and treasure every minute with him – even the very late nights! I’m seeing more of his personality grow every day and it’s amazing. Being a mum is the best thing in the whole world. Just don’t grow up too quickly, Ross!
