When you go on holiday with your youngster, the intensity dial of family life gets turned up a good few notches. Suddenly, it’s that little bit harder to keep to your youngster’s feeding and sleep routine. Her meltdowns happen that little bit quicker, and her cries seem that little bit louder when you’re away from home. But, by way of compensation, all the best parts are amplified, too: the smell of her skin is even lovelier after a day slathered in suncream, bedtime cuddles in a caravan are somehow sweeter, and having time to spend with the people who mean the most to you fills your soul like never before. And whether you’re off to stay with your mother-in-law for the weekend or you’ve booked a villa in Malta, we’re…

babble on

We need to break this to you gently, but new research has found that even before she can babble, your tot prefers to hear other babies talk rather than you! During the study, five-month-old infants spent 40 per cent longer listening to sounds from babies than when adults made the same noises. It’s thought that your baby has a distinct preference for speech that resembles her own, due to the combination of high pitch and resonance, and hearing other babies will encourage her to talk more. When I remember back to being pregnant with Buzz, I recall long afternoon naps (sometimes two hours in length), taking it easy on the sofa, and spending lots of time focusing on me and the fact I was about to become a mum – something I’d spent a long time wishing for. I spent ages re-reading the pregnancy apps (I had a few) over and over again, read book after book about parenting, and even did a weekly mummy yoga class (I also went to an aqua-natal class at 36 weeks where I weightlessly jumped and splashed around in the water for 45 minutes – it was lush, but Buzz arrived the following week and so I no longer qualified for my spot). Back then I had time for me, time…

Our favourite! Bump buddies I’ve been reading Mother&Baby for years, always with a cup of tea and packet of biscuits! I’m currently re-reading the Bump&birth sections of all my old magazines, after finding out baby number six is on the way following an unsuccessful vasectomy! It was really nice to read Giovanna’s full takeover of the April issue after watching the Fletchers’ announcement video. We’re due around the same time, so it’s lovely to compare notes when I read her column. raw pleasure

BEING PREGNANT DURING the summer has its advantages – think of all the delicious, seasonal fresh fruit and veg that’s available, making it so much easier to give your growing baby a nutritional boost. But it’s not just your bump that benefits – researchers have recently discovered eating raw fruit and veg could have a positive impact on your mental health. The study found that eating fruit and vegetables in their purest state, rather than cooked, tinned or processed, is more strongly associated with improved psychological wellbeing, including a positive mood and life satisfaction.
