Motor Boat & Yachting August 2019

Published by TI Media Limited Motor Boat & Yachting is Europe's best motor boating magazine. It's also the oldest, with a history dating back to 1904. Our long experience makes our boat tests the most authoritative in the business and means our technical coverage is without equal. Each month we cover the best new boats on the market, cruising areas that are both practical and inspirational, and the latest boating developments and training. Core editorial focuses on boats up to 80ft, but we also venture beyond the 80ft barrier in our monthly Custom Yachting pages.

SEE MORE mby.com/charter SEE MORE mby.com/h38 Sunseeker’s founder ROBERT BRAITHWAITE (pictured left) was one of my all-time heroes, not just because of what he achieved but how he achieved it. Despite his astonishing success, he remained one of the most modest, courteous and kind-hearted people I’ve ever met. He always seemed more comfortable broom-in-hand chatting to his employees than he was hobnobbing with the rich and famous. It’s a measure of the man that the only boat he personally owned wasn’t a Sunseeker 40M but a Cornish Shrimper sailing dinghy. Even when we erroneously reported in 2010 that Sunseeker had been sold for £25million (the actual sum was much higher), he never once raised his voice. We had a frank conversation, he accepted my apology and we moved on. The next time we met,…

this month’s 10

1 BATMAN’S SUPERYACHT Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has built his very own batboat. Unimpressed with off-the-shelf designs from production builders, the fashion guru asked superyacht designer Tommaso Spadolini to create ‘a boat that Batman would drive’. The result is every bit as dramatic as one of Cavalli’s own catwalk creations. Powered by triple 1900hp MAN engines linked to Rolls-Royce KaMeWa waterjets, the 28m superyacht, named Freedom, is capable of an impressive 40 knots. However, it’s the flamboyant styling and dark colouring as much as the performance that would appeal to the caped crusader. A swooping hard top that plunges all the way back to the transom gives it a side profile as dramatic as any Batmobile. Unlike Cavalli’s other boat, a 41m Baglietto, which is predominantly used for corporate entertainment, Freedom is for…

cruising life

Most of us, especially on the south coast, are used to quite gregarious cruising areas, with plenty of other boats about and a sense of company and camaraderie. But anyone looking for wilder, more remote waters cannot do better than make for the west of Scotland. This spectacular coastline of soaring mountains and sheltered sea lochs lifts you instantly from the stresses of modern life. Jane and I were cruising in the Firth of Clyde recently and were captivated once again by the sense of space and room to breathe in the upper lochs. One of the most dramatic is Loch Striven, which creeps mysteriously inland from the south-east end of the famous Kyles of Bute. We saw no other yachts, from the mouth of Striven to its head. We passed…

the boataholic

I hate jetskis! There, I said it. I can feel the hackles rising from here, so I’ll qualify that. Yes of course, there are jetskiers that ride responsibly. And if that’s you, I applaud you. The problem is that it’s a bit like having a neck tattoo of Tyrone and Chardonnay’s names and dates of birth. You might be the chairman of Coutts, but you’re still going to be judged for it. And as ever, it’s never the responsible ones we remember. It’s the others. All those others… Most jetskiers seem to crave attention. It’s why, when presented with unlimited ocean, they like to race up and down the shoreline where they can be admired by their captive audience. Up and down and up and down, making that dreadful jetski drone.…

my other passion is triumph motorcycles

It all started when I was 16 years old. I’d just passed my motorcycle test and was on my way home from my Saturday job when I saw it; a 500cc Triumph 5TA Speed Twin. Sitting proudly, if a little battered and bruised, on the forecourt and emblazoned with the words, ‘Bike of the Week – £99’, I had to have it. I’m showing my age here, but I was among the last who could pass their test at 16, a rudimentary affair which involved little more than riding around the block a couple of times and performing hand signals, and then riding any size motorcycle without a helmet. The year was 1971. At the time I had hair halfway down my back, which I would wash and then use the…
