report from france

Last spring, I flew to France to attend the Salon du Multicoque at La Grande Motte, which is a resort and marina in the south of France. The boat show is the largest multihull show in the world and proved to be a fascinating look at the rapid growth of the multihull category and the direction design seems to be going. Plus, attending the show was a great first look at some of the new boats that will make their debuts at the Annapolis sailboat show in October, which is the largest multihull show on this side of the pond. Like so much else in our modern society, multihulls are getting bigger, more sophisticated, more luxurious and more expensive. The biggest boat on display was the Catana 72 which is a…

world match race tour update

Thick fog filled Narragansett Bay, RI as teams struggled to see the bows of their M32s let alone the next mark and course boundaries during the opening day of the World Match Race Tour’s stop in Newport, RI held May 30 to June 4. Sail Newport at Fort Adams State Park, which hosted the only North American stop for the Volvo Ocean Race last year, provided the perfect venue for the public to have an up close view of the action. Racing was held directly off the fort and admission was free and open to the public. Play by play commentary made it easy for even non-sailors to follow along and understand the races while a M32 set up on shore gave event goers a close up view of the…

blown out of the water

After years of financial turmoil while at the same time building what had become an iconic yacht brand, Peter Johnstone has finally had to relinquish the helm of his company Gunboat Yachts. After filing for bankruptcy last fall, Gunboat has gone through a long process of appointing a new interim president, Barry Carroll, assessing assets and liabilities and finally putting the company up for sale. Several interested parties stepped forward. One bidder was Hudson Marine in China, which was building the larger Gunboats. Already involved in a two way lawsuit with Gunboat, Hudson offered $610,000 for the Gunboat brand and existing assets. Further details of the offer were not made public when a second company stepped forward with a better offer. Grand Large Yachting from France made an offer of $910,000 for…

nacra 17 overview

Almost 10 years ago, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Qingdao, China Antón Paz and Fernando Echavarri (representing Spain) won gold for the Tornado event marking the end of a more than 30 year run for the Rodney March designed, 20 foot long Tornado when it was deselected as an Olympic class. Now, almost 10 years later, the Nacra 17 debuts this month at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro as the new mixed (men and women) multihull Olympic boat. THE NACRA 17 The Nacra 17 is a 17 foot catamaran that was designed specifically as the mixed boat for the Olympics. The Formula 16 and a Formula 18, also produced by Nacra, were in consideration as the Olympic boat, however, they would have needed changes to aspects…
