your next level

You are built for what you do. You have a particular structure. No matter what you bench, squat or deadlift, it is not going to change. When you are lanky you will need more reps and more time under a load to gain size, as opposed to a stockier person who can move up and down like a piston. We are all different. You must stick to what is working for you in the gym while still being mindful of adding new things to your repertoire. I think we are making things far too complex. You must do this or that exercise at this or that angle for this or that many reps and sets. In reality, it’s best to stick to the basics and tweak your training only…

life’s priorities

Driving home after a great gym session last night, I stopped next to a car similar to mine. This one was nicer, though. It was customised and kitted out with great accessories. I caught the attention of the driver and gave him a thumbs up while I admired his car. We pulled away from the intersection together. He then pulled ahead of me as we went through another intersection. An oncoming car was already in the intersection, turning right. The driver didn’t seem to be aware that we were approaching. That’s when the car I had been admiring smashed into it. It was a smaller car and took the brunt of the impact – it literally bent in half, leaving it like a smashed tin can in the…

LOCKOUTS In strength sports such as weightlifting and powerlifting locking out is a necessary part of the lift in order for a rep to count. If this aspect is not trained it could hold an athlete back from making progress, or predispose them to greater injury risk. When you perform double or triple reps with heavy weight, locking out would make more sense because of the poundage. Constant tension is therefore not always appropriate if your goal is enhanced strength or a greater hypertrophy (muscle building) response. Locking the joints takes the tension off muscles, so the majority of bodybuilders avoid this. “A GOOD RULE OF THUMB WHEN YOU DO LEG EXTENSIONS, DUMBBELL KICKBACKS OR PRESS-DOWNS IS TO NEVER USE MOMENTUM TO REACH LOCKOUT.” LOCK OUT OR…

“FOR INSPIRATION I ALWAYS LOOK AT ATHLETES WHO ARE BIGGER AND BETTER THAN ME. I TELL MYSELF THAT I TOO CAN BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF MYSELF. IN MY FIRST FEW SHOWS I DIDN’T PLACE ANYWHERE AND THAT JUST MOTIVATED ME TO TRAIN HARDER AND TO DO BETTER!” THE BEAST FROM THE EAST After a two-year break due to an operation on his knee, the 34-year-old TRISTAN VAN AARDE showed true grit when he returned to the stage and reached the top echelons of what is often described as the most competitive sport on the planet. This year the gargantuan Biogen-sponsored Port Elizabethan is taking a 12-month hiatus to pack on even more muscle in his quest for unmatched size and conditioning. What inspired you to become…
