In late May, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) announced it was discontinuing production of Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboards. The company cited impacts from the COVID-19 shutdowns as the deciding factor. The news pulled at the heartstrings of many a longtime boater, who has no doubt run an Evinrude outboard at some point. Evinrude was founded in 1907 by Ole Evinrude and went on to rule the roost for many years. The company weathered some rough periods, including bankruptcy in the 1990s after a disastrous launch of a direct injection technology called Ficht. Issues with powerheads and exploding engines dissolved consumer confidence. BRP stepped in, purchased the brand, recalled the bad engines, improved the technology and brought Evinrude back to the marketplace in 2003 with the launch of the E-TEC line…

You’d have to be holed up in a yurt in New Mexico not to notice the trend toward larger outboards powering bigger and bigger boats over the past decade. Walk any boat show dock and you’re guaranteed to see five Seven Marine 627s hanging off the back of some 53-foot center console. There’s even a 65-foot “center console” on the market—it seems the “console” is as long as most Grady-Whites from just a decade ago. With smooth, powerful gasoline outboards available up to 627 hp apiece and diesel outboards entering the market, the trend isn’t going to stop any time soon. single outboard joysticks have arrived

When the email from Yamaha announcing a joystick control for single outboards popped up in my inbox, I immediately wondered how the heck can you move a boat sideways with a single engine? Well, that’s one bit of functionality this little marvel can’t do, but Yamaha incorporated plenty of other controls into the new Helm Master EX system that make this a very user-friendly system deserving of attention. The redesigned joystick allows the operator to steer, shift and adjust the throttle with just one hand, which is very helpful when docking. You can also turn the engine from one side to the other with a slight twist, rather than cranking the wheel over six or seven times. It’s quick and responsive. When celebrated Italian design studio Nuvolari-Lenard is involved in a new yacht project, the resulting vessel is nearly guaranteed to be cutting-edge and contemporary, turning heads wherever she goes. Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard are the brain trust behind a long string of sexy superyachts, from Palmer Johnson’s PJ135 and PJ150 series to the award-winning 282-foot Oceanco Alfa Nero. In recent years, the studio has been involved in a design collaboration with Monte Carlo Yachts, located not far from Nuvolari-Lenard in Monfalcone on Italy’s Adriatic Coast. Although the Monte Carlo range is smaller, running from 66 to 105 feet, Nuvolari-Lenard’s superyacht sensibility is evident in every model.
