welcome to the workshop

Never underestimate the power of heritage. In uncertain times it anchors our sense of place and identity. Motoring heritage in particular allows us to examine advances in engineering and the evolution of design; no other 20th century consumable holds up a mirror to social history in quite the same way. The story of the car is fascinating and inspiring so it is no surprise that Vauxhall calls on its fantastic heritage collection so often and to such great effect. This year sees the 60th anniversary of the Victor and the 80th of the revolutionary 10hp model, both design and engineering landmarks. Rolling them out, with 15 other cars of note from Vauxhall’s illustrious past, to frame the launch their latest offering, was a smart move by the company. When viewed against the…

classics launch the grandland x

‘Grandland X was surrounded by 17 cars from Vauxhall’s heritage collection’ There can be few manufacturers able to roll out the kind of heritage that Vauxhall Motors has at its disposal. Even fewer willing to use that heritage to frame and highlight the modern product. So when the great and the good of the modern car world gathered recently at the magnificent Bicester Heritage Centre for the launch of Vauxhall’s newest MPV, the Grandland X, it was a bold statement. Surrounded by 17 landmark cars from the company’s Heritage collection, the pre-launch unveiling, which involved a pre-poduction vehicle straight from testing, was conducted by Chairman Rory Harvey and the Grandland X’s chief designer. Journalists were given the opportunity to drive all the toys, from the 1904 car with six horsepower, tiller steering and…

the month in 5 pictures

The Austin 3 Litre Owners Club celebrated the ‘Landlobster’s’ 50th birthday with a grand gathering at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon. Fourteen MG owners completed an incredible 102-day road trip from Bangkok to Abingdon, covering 25,000km and passing through 18 countries. The National Motor Museum’s magnificent BRM V16 will be fired up for the first time in 5 years at this year’s Beaulieu Autojumble on September 2-3. Worth visiting. Austin A30 and A35 saloons were provided by members of the HRDC Academy for the Silverstone Classic celebrity race on July 30. The design mule for the ‘car that never was’ has been listed on eBay. ‘Mega Bertha’, was meant to follow ‘Baby Bertha’ when the Cavalier Coupé was launched.…

starting handle

‘It’s a line in the sand, but it is also a token’ Early in July, the French government announced plans to phase out diesel and petrol cars from 2040. Then BMW announced that a fully electric version of the MINI will be built at Cowley. So the government’s announcement that from 2040, sales of new cars with diesel and petrol engines will be banned, should come as no surprise. It’s a line in the sand, but it is also a token. The real death of the internal combustion engine will happen well before then. I would be surprised if there are any major marques making fuel burners beyond the mid-2030s. As with all major technological advances, the biggest shift will happen as an evolutionary process. We shouldn’t panic. As long as the government…

reliant prototype car honoured

A blue plaque has been unveiled in Tamworth following a campaign supported by the Reliant Motor Club and its Honorary Member HRH The Princess Royal. The plaque is attached to the house on Kettlebrook Road where resident Tom L Williams and his colleague Ewart S Thompson built their first car in 1934. The brick shed where it was constructed still exists at the bottom of the garden. Elvis Payne, Chairman and Historian of the Reliant Motor Club, says not many people knew about the house. ‘We are delighted we have been able to highlight the significance of the property. Not even locals were aware of the historical connection to Reliant and so it’s great to not only mark Reliant’s birthplace but also to pay tribute to its founders.’ On finishing the vehicle –…
