the ultimate bucket list

I’M NOT USUALLY A SENTIMENTAL PERSON. But at this moment, right here, I’m writing the Ed’s Letter for GQ South Africa as its new Editor-in-chief, which carries so much sentiment I have tissues on hand in case I start bawling my eyes out thinking about my journey to this very moment. Audition: A Memoir, by legendary American broadcaster Barbara Walters, is one of my favourite books. She writes about how she feels as though she has to audition for the various stages of her life. Being here, doing this job, has been the audition of a lifetime, only I didn’t know that was what it’d be until I landed the role. My experience confirms your dreams are valid, no matter how audacious. I whispered to God way before I joined the Condé…

a new era of leather, cactus leather

THE “HERITAGE BRAND FOR A NEW GENERATION’’ IS UNQUESTIONABLY A STEP AHEAD IN THE TEXTILE INNOVATION GAME. BUT BEFORE WE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS BRAND’S IDEAS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, LET’S LOOK BACK AT HOW IT ALL BEGAN. Simon & Mary was founded back in 2014, but the family has been in the millinery industry since 1935. As a family run business, the brand still works out of the same factory in Joburg as it did 50 years ago. The new shapes and styles you see people wearing on the streets today are made using the same trusted machinery. It’s more a legacy than a business, if you think about it. The milliners who created hats in the ’60s have passed on their skills, knowledge and experience to their children,…

“it’s not by mistake…it’s not!”

GQ: You are, like, the face of lockdown… You communicated in words what most of us were feeling. Did you know that? Elsa Majimbo: I did. People would always comment, ‘Omg, me too!’ and the like. So I always felt connected to my audience. GQ: Your social media exploded in just a few months. I mean, you have Anderson Cooper fanning over you, and Rihanna hollering at you with Fenty. How does that feel? EM: It’s insane. Especially Rihanna! Everyone knows I’m obsessed with her. It’s a very humbling experience. I never imagined rubbing shoulders with the people I’m now meeting, and the fact that they’re fanning over me is awesome. People told me I’d get used to it, but so far I haven’t. I love freaking out, though, it’s fun. I hope…

why waiting feels terrible

BACK BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, WHEN THE GQ STAFF ALL WORKED TOGETHER in an office, a favourite in-office activity was discussing how long we had to wait for the building’s lifts. Or, more accurately, griping and grousing about how long we had to wait for the lifts because waiting is something seemingly everyone finds annoying. Now, these days, it can feel like all we’re doing is waiting: for the US election to finally happen, then for election results. Or waiting for a vaccine, and the pandemic to finally end. Waiting to see what life might look like on the other side of this. It’s… not a great feeling. But what if it didn’t have to be this bad? Jason Farman has some answers. A professor at Maryland University in the US and…
