dare to be different

FOLLOWING an unexpected dent in international sales and profit decline in the first quarter of 2019, Mercedes-Benz is said to be looking at cutting costs and jobs in an attempt to save billions of dollars to restore profit margins. Of course, the world’s oldest brand is not the only one to feel the current financial pinch. In an ambiguous, volatile international marketplace, with trade wars having a real impact on profit margins, Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, Toyota, Ford, Honda – all the car companies, in fact, are looking at reducing costs in some way to navigate these troubled financial waters. The recent reports on Mercedes-Benz’s underwhelming financial results though, accompanied by scrutiny of the brand’s international sales numbers, have given rise to rumours that the slow-selling X-Class bakkie is on the chopping…

turbo maintenance

Email your views to editorial@leisurewheels.com or submit them via our Facebook page or the website at www.leisurewheels.co.za. Please supply your postal address, in case you win a prize. I have just read the article in Leisure Wheels July on turbo maintenance and request some advice. I own two 2011 Mercedes- Benz G300 vehicles. The one is based in Johannesburg which I use as my daily drive and has about 220 000km on the odometer. The other is based in Durban and I use this on my infrequent trips to the coast. It has about 190 000km on the odometer. Both vehicles receive regular oil and filter changes at a non-Mercedes workshop but I use only Mercedes oils and parts which I purchase from Mercedes. Unfortunately, it has been my experience over the years…

So, the guys in the USA built their own. With 270kW and 600Nm of torque… Sean Fenwick: I think the 3.5 EcoBoost would have been a better fit but okay… This could still be good fun… #properrangerraptor. Attyboy Mthethwa: The Ranger design team must get the reward; those guys know what they’re doing. Callie Pretorius: Now you can call it a true Raptor. Werner Wentzel: Can we also get the Raptor with the 2.3T (Mustang) Ecoboost engine please? It’s certainly not going to be called the hairdresser’s alternative like in the Mustang. Some BMW trainees got together and built this…

off they go voetspore in south africa

Voetspore in India recently concluded on SABC2. It was an eventful journey on the subcontinent, giving the Voetspore guys a unique experience of a journey outside the African continent. But there is always a yearning to return to Africa. It was decided, this time, not to travel just in Africa, but to restrict the journey to within the borders of our own country. Voetspore in South Africa goes by the acronym ViSA. The strange part is that this journey requires no visas, not even a passport. We thought it best to go off the beaten track in South Africa. There is a certain danger in doing this journey. Over the past two decades viewers became used to the fact that the locations visited by Voetspore are often exquisite and sometimes dangerous. Travelling…

thirty years of the land rover discovery

This year, we’re using our adventures in Land Rover Discoverys to highlight their achievements over the past three decades. First launched at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Discovery soon became the Land Rover of choice for the Camel Trophy. This gruelling endurance event tested adventurers to their limits, putting them and the Discoverys through their paces every year as they explored regions such as the Amazon, Siberia, Madagascar and Australia. The brawny off-roaders in their instantly recognisable yellow-orange colours and gritty 4×4 attitude showed their capabilities in some of the toughest terrain on the planet. This got me thinking about some of our own epic journeys in Discoverys and some unique firsts. For example, we took two Discoverys on a 100-day Boundless Southern Africa expedition to unite nature, culture and…
