it’s a long, long road…

IN 1933, BRITS CAMERON GILG and Walter Kay drove a Morris Eight from London to Cape Town. The journey, which covered more than 20 000km, took 158 days to complete. It was the first London to Cape Town record.Over the years, the record was broken several times: in 1963, a Ford Escort smashed the time, completing the journey in 13 days, eight hours. This record stood for 47 years. Only in 2010 did a Land Rover Discovery team improve the record to 11 days and 11 minutes. The year 2012 was a big year for the record run. First, a British team in a tiny Fiat Panda 4x4 broke the record with a 10-day run. A few months later, another Brit crew – in a Land Rover Discovery 3 – reduced…

To cover the pitfalls and highs of all these models in detail would take up the whole December issue.Having said that, I am…

This was your choice, so stop moaning and enjoy the ‘Africa experience’. You’re not a baby anymore. You’re a grown up and know what is happening out there. get organised

Johan Badenhorst is probably South Africa’s best-known overlander, with his amazing adventures televised on SABC2. He also knows a lot about patience – probably the best attribute if you plan on travelling the African continent.I t is truly amazing how poorly prepared even experienced African travellers can sometimes be. The lack of proper preparation is often the main reason a bribe is paid. And then we blame the corrupt officials in Zimbabwe, Mozambique or the DRC.The only way to stay out of trouble and avoid greasing the palms of the officials is to not present an opportunity. This we know. Yet, way too often, we are the guilty party.I am not only referring to first-time travellers to the continent, nor people who have a once-in-a-lifetime safari to the Serengeti. I…

a life in the saddle

Andrew McLean is a cyclist, TV presenter, the owner of Cycle Lab and a mountain-bike fanatic. He loves exploring new places on his bike. He has ridden the Cape Epic many, many times, and he’ll be riding it again this year. He is a Toyota ambassador and drives a Fortuner.Carrying his bike over an unrideable section of the Cape Epic.T o say that Andrew McLean is an avid cyclist is a gross understatement. Andrew lives and breathes cycling. “Whenever someone proposes a holiday destination, I immediately ask if I can bring my bike. If it’s not a place where you can cycle, I probably won’t go. For this reason, places like Thailand have never appealed to me,” he says.He cycles six days a week, getting up at 3:30 every morning…
