scare tactics

THE cellphone rang. It was a Durbanbased number I didn’t recognise. For a while I had been avoiding answering calls from unknown numbers – inevitably those calls ended up with an uninterested “how are you?” on the other end of the line, and someone who wants to sell me something I don’t want or need.In that process of avoiding calls from unknown numbers, there have been a few missed business calls, too. Authentic business-related calls. So it’s a bit of catch 22: avoid the “how are yous” or miss a few (possibly) important calls. For quite a while though, the telemarketers left me alone. I was happy. So when the unknown Durban-based number appeared on my phone’s screen, my brain started calculating the options: there are a few people and companies we…

buying a 4x4 for under r200 000

Your recent articles on buying specific vehicles below a certain threshold, made me decide to write this letter about my own experience in buying a secondhand 4×4 SUV for below R200 000.Towards the end of last year, I decided to decrease our fixed monthly expenses and the axe fell on my Amarok Double Cab 4Motion, which was the only vehicle on a lease in our fleet of five. My plan was to use whatever was left over after the bank had been paid off to buy another vehicle.I sold the Amarok on the internet easily and with R200 000 in my bank account, I started searching for a vehicle over the Christmas period. My only way of finding a suitable vehicle was through the internet, as I live in Mossel…

Please supply your postal address, in case you win a prize.A ROUNDABOUT TRIP IN A HYUNDAI ACCENTI appreciate the concept of overlanding, but in reading Leisure Wheels I’ve discovered that driving for pleasure can be undertaken in any type of vehicle, not just specialised SUVs. The February 2017 issue of your magazine, in particular, was a mindbender for me. Reading about a Porsche 944 and Suzuki Super Carry used in vastly different but equally unexpected ways, made me realise that driving can be fun whatever vehicle you’re in.So it was with great excitement that I prepared to take a trip from Durban to Swaziland to attend the birthday party of a good friend.…

death of a device?

Johan Badenhorst is probably South Africa’s best-known overlander, with his amazing adventures televised on SABC2. He also knows a lot about patience – probably the best attribute if you plan on travelling the African continent.Navigating your way through the sticks requires a GPS unit. Or a smartphone loaded with the latest off-road mapping software.Ever since we left Cape Cross in March 2000 until recently, every step of our journeys has been planned, mapped and recorded on a GPS.In the recent past, I have written quite a bit in our monthly Voetspore diary about these navigation tools. I see this as just as much a part of a safari as Old Man Emu suspension, winch, long-range fuel tank and all-terrain tyres. Yet now, after completing the Indian Expedition, I believe that…

where the wind speaks: landies, land yachts & living traditions

Kingsley Holgate is South Africa’s most famous adventurer, a renowned humanitarian and author. The 71-year-old founded the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, which aims to “save and improve lives through adventure”. He has handed out thousands of mosquito nets to help save people from malaria and more recently, provided people who are sight-impaired with glasses. Although he’s driven other brands over the years, he now won’t drive anything but a Land Rover. Mind you, the Discovery 4 TDV6 is rather comfy.Kingsley’s Discos dealing with some serious dust.As always, the trip had a strong humanitarian aspect to it.A land yacht can be a great way to travel if you’ve got a strong wind at your back.Sitting around the campfire, we reminisce about a crazy expedition we cooked up called ‘Land Rovers, Land Yachts…
