getting personal

A few years ago, a colleague and I went to shoot a house decorated by a top designer. While beautifully furnished and very neat and tidy, the house looked a little unlived in, so we assumed that the designer would bring some accessories to liven it up for the photographs. We were naturally concerned when she arrived and all she had with her were flowers. But we needn’t have worried. She got to work, opening cupboards, removing lovely decanters and glassware, moving books from shelves to tabletops, combining an unusual wooden plate with a couple of golf trophies, which looked amazingly good together. She found some flowering orchids and plants on the veranda, and in less than an hour, the house looked gorgeous. I’m sure when the owners got home, they…

KITCHEN COOL There are two kinds of people in this world – those who are able to see potential and those who can’t. I fall into the second group, so I need all the help I can get to give my dreams wings. I’ve been looking for a way to update my kitchen for many years, then in the May 2019 issue of Garden and Home on pages 42 and 43, my dream kitchen unfolded before my eyes. The contrast between the charcoal and white, together with the wood-look floors, was mind blowing. Now I can start planning this modern look in my own kitchen. highveld homestead

While most residential estates have strict architectural guidelines, Mooikloof in Pretoria is one of the exceptions. This worked in architect Cornell van der Westhuizen’s favour when he was asked to design a contemporary farmhouse for a young family. He was able to take the concept a step further and include some bold, contemporary features. To fit into the landscape, the house was designed in three sections. The central area houses the kitchen, dining and living areas, and the bedrooms are accommodated in two wings. While the structure has everything one would expect in a modern farmhouse – sliding barn doors, exposed brick accents, galvanised rainwater tanks – step inside and you’re greeted by a double-volume entrance hall with a dramatic sculptural staircase and a cement wall flecked with silver leaf and…

remembering the past

How would you describe your work? Eye catching. The use of bright colours makes my paintings impossible to miss. They are a representation of forgotten times remembered again. I translate old, faded and frail photographs into fresh, colourful and vibrant works. What mediums and techniques do you use? I paint with oils. In order to achieve the vivid colours, I use a technique called underpainting. I build up thin layers of paint, gradually applying more until I am satisfied. I finish with a layer of glaze, which creates a glowing effect. What inspires you? Time-worn photographs of my own family captured in moments of peace or euphoria. By not depicting too much detail, I keep the figures universal, so that the viewer can liken them to their own memories. The connection is…
