ed’s letter

Our winning letter this month is from Graham Lindemann, one of the Bro’s we featured last year as they built up an old Jeep - using the resources, talents and expertise of many local 4x4 fitment centres and suppliers. It was a showcase for what’s possible right here, but, in this instance, that’s not the point. Graham’s point is that when it comes to giving advice and offering opinion, talk is often cheap. In fact, dirt cheap... particularly on the subject of things 4x4, no matter whether the topic is tyres, vehicle brands or suspension lifts. It’s a valid position. We all know how heated things get around the braai and on forums, where the topic is just the kick-off for a personal rant. We agree with Graham that most advice…

RATE THE 2.4 TUNA Has anyone gone off-road with the Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 Auto 4x4? I got mine a month ago, and I know it’s better than the 2.5 Hilux 4x4, but so far I have driven only a 30km dirt trail. What do other enthusiasts think of this vehicle? – Imran BATTERY ADVICE I need to get a new Deep Cycle battery. I really like the Discover Batteries, but they are expensive. My last Deltec lasted about five years. I have about R3000 to spend. Any suggestions? – Anton CRUISER WANTED I am urgently looking for a Land Cruiser Camper. I will be filming a documentary through Africa for a year and plan to leave within the next two months. – Justin@ sibuyagamereserve.co.za CABLE-TIE SCOURGE The advice on your Overlander’s Code is being ignored. I…

A PINCH OF SALT I recently followed an interesting Facebook thread regarding tyre pressures in the Tankwa. Some people were sure that you have to air down, and others claimed that they had never aired down and had never had a puncture. Needless to say, it spilled over into a debate about tyre manufacturers, and which one is best. The question is: who do you/ should you believe when asking for advice on your 4x4? When I got my Jeep in 2016, I was new to the 4x4 scene and I had a lot of questions. I still do. The good news is that an answer is never hard to find, what with Google, 4x4 Forums and magazines, Youtube videos, Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups. The bad news is, if you look…

overlander’s code

In response to a growing number of complaints about how we conduct ourselves in the wilderness, we decided to draw up and promote a code of conduct for overlanders. We’d like to include your input, comments and debate, so please send your suggestions to editor@sa4x4.co.za. FIREWOOD In Take your firewood in with you; don’t chop down trees or gather dead wood within parks or wilderness areas. KEEP QUIET We go to the bush to appreciate the sights and sounds of the bush. No music, and nothing louder than a spoken conversation. RESPECT LOCALS – LAWS AND PEOPLE Obey the rules of the place you’re travelling through. Respect locals and their traditions; if they don’t like having their photos taken, don’t take photos. SUPPORT LOCAL TRADE Your spending money at the local shops and lodges…

the giraffe: standing tall

Given that 21 June was ‘World Giraffe Day’, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to share something about these iconic animals with you. The giraffe – the name is believed to be derived from the Arab word zarafa meaning ‘fast walker’ – has captured the human imagination for millennia. The Roman poet Horace opined that the giraffe’s unique appearance resembled that of a camel with leopard markings, which (together with its Arabic name) gave rise to the scientific title Giraffa camelopardalis. “How Giraffes evolved their long necks has been the subject of debate dating back to the early days of evolutionary theory” The earliest human association with giraffes is recorded in the 9000-year-old rock carvings of northern Niger. The forebear of the two extant members of the family Giraffidae (the…
