cook your heart out

I’ve never been afraid of hard work, because my mom taught me: When you work hard, you are noticed. And those who are noticed will always have work. “So my child, you must work hard to have work!” And this has always been my mantra. But sometimes I get tired, like everyone does. Sometimes I want to throw in the towel and stop making plans and experimenting with new things. Before I get there, though, it’s time to make food and then I rest in the kitchen. Because that’s where I become calm, my emotions change. The kitchen is actually my psychologist who sees me at least three times a day. (That’s on a quiet day, most of the time I’m in her consulting room all day!) Recently a friend and…

volkswagen t-roc

There is a new addition to Volkswagen’s popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) range, the Volkswagen T-Roc. This SUV slots in between the T-Cross and Tiguan and competes with the Audi Q2 and BMW X1. It’s a good-looking vehicle, certain to catch the eye, and is available in two models, Design and the more sporty R-Line. There are two turbo engines, both with automatic gearboxes, to choose from: a 1,5-litre and the 2,0-litre, which we took for atest drive. This engine, which also does duty in Volkswagen’s nimble Golf GTI, is very spirited and the ride is also fantastic. Like any Volkswagen model, the T-Roc boasts top-quality interior finishes plus all sorts of modern electronic gadgets. Prices start at R489 400.…

paws a moment

85% The percentage of pet “parents” who quite rightly believe they can prolong their fur friends’ lives with the right type of food. They therefore focus on healthy meals rather than treats. Now for smaller portions! PIZZA NIGHT FOR DONALD AND FRIENDS You may have the best intentions when you feed ducks with leftover bread, chips and pizza. But no matter how much pleasure you and the hungry ducks derive from this, it can be unhealthy for them. Birdseed is the best choice (especially for wild birds), according to an Amsterdam study. But also in limited amounts. Ducks should mostly eat the greenery around them, like grass, as well as little fish and frogs. All plentiful in and around the dam. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Last year was a rollercoaster ride – and food,…

a slow sunday in the karoo

Being a kid in the Karoo was the best time of my life. It may seem sad to some that I had my best times several decades ago, because what about the present and all that lies ahead? We cousins were a wild bunch, but when Ouma Betty rang the bell for Sunday lunch, we immediately lined up at her table, writes Bianca du Plessis Malan Sunday lunch was the highlight of every farm visit. No matter how hot it was, Ouma’s Aga burned all day, from breakfast onwards. Nobody was scared of carbs or of eating too much meat. The table was always laden…
