UTE JUNKER Ute spends at least half the year on the road, exploring the world’s wildernesses, luxurious lodgings and its most fascinating cultures. “I love reading about other countries, but some things you can only learn on the ground: the conviviality of a coffee ceremony, the aura of ancient stones or just how complex navigating Istanbul addresses can be.” AMANDA MARAIS Growing up in South Africa definitely shaped Amanda as a photographer. Her images capture people and wildlife, particularly the residents of the Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary in Limpopo Province, a foreverhome for lions and tigers rescued from circuses and other entertainment. She lives in Hermanus in the Western Cape, a place famous for its whales, flowers, vineyards, leopards and sharks. CAMERON BRAY As Director of Northrop & Johnson Australia, Cameron has worked throughout the…

expect the unexpected: the new expedition class

It may seem as though the entire world has been explored, however genuine voyages of discovery are still possible. With its two ships, the five-star HANSEATIC and four-star BREMEN, Hamburg-based Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has been operating successfully in the luxury cruise expedition segment for over 25 years. In 2016, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises announced news of two new-builds, the five-star expedition vessels HANSEATIC nature and HANSEATIC inspiration, the latter to be operating for the international, English-speaking marketplace. Following 20 months of construction, these are scheduled to launch respectively in April and October 2019. The two 230-guest, state-of-the-art ships (199 on Antarctic expeditions) will be structurally identical. Route concepts will be operated not only in the Arctic and Antarctica, but also in warmer water destinations such as the Great Lakes, South America and the Amazon. Along with…

diamond allure

J Farren-Price Sydney is a well-known family-owned luxury watch and jewellery boutique located in the hub of Sydney’s luxury shopping district at 80 Castlereagh Street. To celebrate its 75th year in business, J Farren-Price has commissioned exquisite 18-carat white gold oval-cut drop earrings (with two-carat diamonds in each) and dazzling matching 5.02-carat oval-cut diamond ring with a pave-set diamond halo (as pictured here). The ring’s centre oval diamond is E grade with VS2 clarity, offering excellent brightness and sparkle. Oval-cut diamonds accentuate the facial features and jaw line when worn as earrings, reflecting light brilliantly, as well as subtly enhancing the length and shape of the fingers. These gorgeous pieces are a wonderful selection for someone who loves the sparkle of the round brilliant-cut diamond, but desires a unique shape.…

top travel trends on our radar

1 Yachting When you’d like the privacy of an exclusive villa and the flexibility to have a barbecue on whichever beach you choose, you need to charter a superyacht, just as celebrities and oligarchs are wont to do. Powered by sail or by motor, a yacht will provide you the freedom to go where you choose while enjoying the discreet service of a professional crew. 2 ICELAND The land of fire and ice has never been hotter, with some attributing the interest to a certain throne-obsessed HBO drama that is partly filmed amid its mountains and glaciers. Whether you’re longing to see the Northern Lights, dive in a continental rift or soak in the silica-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, Iceland appeals to travellers with a sense of adventure and a desire to…
