keeping warm

With winter here, we have given you some ideas to make your home warm and cosy, starting with interiors. Guinevere Davies shares ideas on how to make the most of the cold months choosing bedding that’s perfect for your comfy sleep sanctuary – see page 166. As you are aware by now, one of my favourite things to do in winter is to take long hot baths. On page 158, Helen Grange shows us how to achieve a serene luxe bathroom with the latest sanitaryware, spa baths and steam showers. Lighting also plays a crucial role when creating the mood in a room, and on page 174 Hasmita Amtha looks at how it can change and transform your space. meet mlondolozi hempe

A creative platform established in December 2014, Umongo was founded by Mlondolozi Hempe after curating and designing for the 12 Rooms Exhibition at the Leon @ CCXIX furniture showroom in Cape Town.“I created a wooden ottoman modelled against a traditional ‘potjie’ pot and ‘Inkundla’ sofa based on a concept of togetherness displaying this sitting in a circular fashion.” My role is to lead the design direction and make sure the vision is carried out on all our projects from concept development to delivery. A typical day would consist of the usual checking of emails in the morning to see which projects are in production. Then following up with suppliers and manufactures on items we need, including making time to design new projects. The most rewarding part of my work is conceptualising ideas…

This is achieved through the use of simple,…

keep it cosy

PETER GORDON Creative director of St Leger & Viney The most important part of choosing fabrics for your living room or bedroom is to find something that you like, something that resonates with you. There are no rules in decorating but plain colours are often a safe option. Different textures of fabric will add depth to the look. If you are feeling more confident you can start adding pattern to your finished room. One of the emerging trends is maximalism, where decorators are using pattern with pattern, layering spaces with complementary patterns in different scales of design. Wallpaper is a very easy way of adding pattern to your room. The easiest way to make a room more cosy is to add textures. Velvet is still one of the trendiest fabrics and can be used…

BONOLO HELEN CHEPAPE OWNER OF LULASCLAN Bonolo Helen Chepape is the founder and owner of design and décor interior studio Lulasclan, and began creating bespoke scatter cushions as a way of celebrating women and New African culture in a contemporary way. Chepape believes that there is a need for culture and heritage to be preserved in the home, and that our homes should be a reflection of where we come from and where we are going. Her New African style of design is a celebration and marriage of African and Western design aesthetics, and a brand that represents the mixture and hybridity of the two worlds. Having worked in the advertising agency field for four years, I always found myself creating textiles for branded spaces. The textiles I create revolve around storytelling and…
