‘‘I grew up in the valley town of Paarl in the Winelands of the Western Cape. I was influenced by the natural beauty surrounding me; the smell of the wet vineyards after a rainstorm, the purple mountains and the wide expanse of the night sky. Fast-forward and I married Ashley in 2002. This year we will celebrate 17 years of marriage and we have two beautiful girls. I started my business out of necessity when we suffered several financial and material losses over a span of about 10 years. Out of desperation I cried out to God to give me an idea and he showed me waste. Since then I have been restoring waste material into beautiful homeware.” I draw inspiration from my beautiful country, South Africa, with its diverse people, landscapes…

ROOMS WITH A VIEW This property, located in the magnificent Serengeti Estates, is built on a stand offering 270° views of the golf course to the east and south. Stretching along the entire southern boundary and applying basic bioclimatic strategies, the house makes the most of showcasing the expansive golf course views. It’s a perfect example of Anthrop Architects’ attention to the client’s brief. www.anthrop.co.za A SPOT TO RELAX This interior beautifully juxtaposes the straight lines of modern architecture with the organic forms of furnishings and fixtures. The layering of textures and pops of sea-foam green make this interior surprisingly striking yet tranquil. www.designair.co.za PERSONALISED SPACE The building’s aesthetic and somewhat eclectic use of materials stand out as the first feature when visiting this unique home. New raw brickwork was used to offset against white…

CARA SAVEN Owner of Cara Saven Wall Design South African design has to be up there with the best design in the world. From our fabrics and furniture design to the quality of our interior designers and decorators, the whole industry really has taken its place on the global stage as one of the leading countries in all forms of design. I think what makes local design unique is the stories we weave into our work. Because of our history, every single designer has a story to tell and each of them is finding ways of bringing that through into their work. Our local design has a depth to it that is hard to find elsewhere in the world. I love the craftmanship of Houtlander and David Krynauw. I am in awe of…
