the evolution of furniture design

It’s a month before the start of the festive season, and I get excited at the thought of being on holiday with family and friends for that well-deserved break. Speaking of spending time with family and friends, Shereen Lurie explores ways you can entertain in style, looking at the latest outdoor furniture trends on the market, see page 168. In bathrooms we look at monochromatic designs and share tips on how to get this longstanding look just right. Guinevere Davies looks at good old stainless steel kitchen sinks and taps, and talks about how they are being given the aesthetic attention and innovation they deserve. Check out all the latest new designs on page 126. If you are not one for the minimalist look, instead preferring things bold with a…

meet karryn cartoulis

I grew up in Umhlanga Rocks, KwaZulu-Natal, when it was still a real little fishing village. After leaving school, I travelled extensively: I lived in London for a year and San Francisco for just over five years. I met my husband in 1996 in Cape Town while I was on holiday and I knew that this would be “home”. After 10 years in the clothing industry, I stumbled on my passion – real estate. My mother has been an estate agent for 38 years and my father has been in the industry for 23 years. It was simply in my blood. I joined the industry in 2007 and I work by the philosophy that whatever you do in life, you have only your reputation to fall back on, so always act…

right here, right now

CHRISTA BOTHA AND CARLA ERASMUS Founders of Bofred We feel a contemporary design philosophy should both capture timelessness and equally embody the current trends and new styles. But contemporary design should also capture a moment in time and tell a story of the now. We love the fact that contemporary design has minimal limitations, that it’s ever-changing. It offers us a multitude of mediums in which to design and create. For us, it’s all about creating original pieces, but also drawing influence from many factors of modern life while staying true and authentic to our unique design style. This includes a neutral palette, natural materials, clean lines and forms. We’re continuously designing and producing new, original furniture and lighting to grow our larger collection. The Bofred studio is an ever-evolving space of contemporary design…

Benjamin David Wheatley grew up in a close-knit, creative family in London, where he studied carpentry and music. Here he managed several high-profile residential, corporate and hospitality joinery projects, and developed a passion for furniture making. Today, Ben works as a full-time furniture designer and maker from his Stellenbosch workshop, experimenting with materials and finishes, and refining designs and processes. Benjamin David Furniture is a furniture design and construction company based in Stellenbosch. We use mixed media, mainly wood and steel. My interest in furniture design has evolved over the years through my experience of building houses and doing mainly site joinery. Furniture-making allows me to be more…

a modern marvel

With a need to create a home environment that not only reflected their tastes but also accommodated their growing family, the owners chose to build entirely from scratch. “Our last home was built in 2002 by the previous owner,” the home owner explains. “It was a beautiful, modern home in a secure golf estate. But it was not the most child-friendly space and we have twin toddlers, so designing a safe, practical home for family living was important to us.” After securing a double stand in an exclusive housing estate in the north of Johannesburg, the owners set about creating their dream space. This meant making the most of the stand’s incredible views of the nearby Jukskei River with double-volume windows and including must-haves such as a playroom, study, pyjama lounge…
