change for the better

Using input from our readers, focus groups, surveys and other research, we revamped the pages of the magazine. In the year since the redesign, we’ve experimented with fresh ideas and tested the waters with some new topics. We want you to be excited when you see your new Taste of Home in your mailbox, so whenever we make a change, we ask ourselves, “Will our readers like this?” And you, as always, do not disappoint when it comes to letting us know! We heard from you via email, Facebook and, of course, plenty of good, old-fashioned letters. Recently, Content Director Jeanne Sidner and I sat down with your letters to better understand your thoughts on the redesign and to look for ways we can give you more of what you love about…

floridian flavor

Hometown Homemade With its rich roasted pork, zippy mustard, gooey cheese and that iconic crusty bread, it’s no wonder two cities in the Sunshine State lay claim to the Cuban sandwich. Recipe, Both Tampa and Miami, Florida, consider themselves the home of the Cuban sandwich. The sandwich has historic roots in Tampa, said to be introduced there by Cuban cigar workers in the late 19th century. It stands apart from its rival Miami version with the addition of Genoa salami. Miami’s take on the Cuban is more simple, nixing the salami and stacking up ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, like our recipe below. One thing both cities can agree on: The special bread loaf—crisp-crusted on the outside, pillowy on the inside—is a must. Cuban Roasted Pork Sandwiches The citrus marinade…

go bananas

It’s a dynamo diet food. At just over 100 CALORIES, 3.1 GRAMS OF FIBER AND ALMOST NO FAT, a banana is a weight-loss wonder. Unripe bananas contain high amounts of resistant starch, which helps reduce your appetite and keeps you feeling full longer. The starch turns to sugar as the banana ripens, so if you’re trying to lose weight, whirl a green banana into your morning smoothie. The chemical makeup of bananas can SOFTEN AND STRENGTHEN HAIR and improve its elasticity. Rescue damaged hair with the easy banana mask below and do away with split ends and breakage. They can protect your heart. The high potassium level helps in lowering blood pressure. People with diets high in potassium have up to a 27% lower risk of heart disease. You’ll be able to rest…
