rachel griffiths & deborah mailman

Sometimes as we are putting together an issue we find a theme organically emerges. This month the thread of connection has weaved its way through our pages. As many of us relish the prospect of being able to reconnect with the special people in our lives again, it feels like a fitting one. Our cover story with Deb Mailman and Rachel Griffiths is a celebration of strong female friendships and their ability to heal, energise and inspire ... not to mention give us a bloody good giggle (page 22). That sentiment is not only shared by the other celebrity duo featured in this issue, Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb, but amplified in their 45,000+ strong community of ‘chatters’. The friends share their delight at building a lively community of (mainly)…

The good fight “I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse.” – FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE It’s always a ‘tools down, kettle on’ day when my new edition of The Weekly arrives. And it was the story about Berlei reaching out (In Brief, AWW, October) that really caught my eye – my mum started work at Berlei when she left school in 1943. October is her birth month and this year she would have been 92 years old but unfortunately we lost her to breast cancer in 1993. I know she would be proud to know that Berlei has joined the fight against this insidious disease. C. Shoobridge, via email. Oldie but a goodie Since July 2018 I have been in and out of hospital. Yesterday a kind nurse handed me the…

aussies in line for royal prize

For the past couple of months the team of five female scientists at Aussie marine project Living Seawalls has been hiding a brilliant secret. They’d almost forgotten that they’d entered the Earthshot Prize – the prestigious global environment prize conceived and launched last year by Prince William – when they received an email. Living Seawalls had been chosen as the only Australian entrant in the prize’s 15 inaugural finalists. “We couldn’t tell anyone until now,” Dr Katherine Dafforn, marine project co-leader, tells The Weekly. “We’ve been chosen in the Revive Our Oceans category, which is super exciting.” With sea levels on the rise, concrete defences against the tide now ring half the shorelines of coastal cities. But these artificially built defences can be devastating for marine life. Founded in 2018, Living…

The one thing I’d never sell is … my children, pretty sure it’s illegal anyway. My dream home would be … subject to constant change and evolvement. The best advice I ever received was … it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Told this very young and didn’t want to believe it, but it is true. The last time I cried was … with my wife at the last episode of four seasons of Unforgotten, totally took us unaware. My guilty pleasure is … car and house shopping. You’ll be surprised to know I … love cars almost as much as houses. The best thing about being on TV is … following my passion as a job. My motto in life is … face problems with a search for a solution and appreciate what you…
