Although it still might be a busy time as we try and get everything done before the end of the year, when the dust settles and you finally have a chance to sit down and breathe, you may be looking for something to fill your time in the cold days ahead. Fi Bowman’s cover quilt, which captures the spirit and magic of winter so well, is just the thing. By no means a quick make, this is one to take your time over and sew a little at a time. This is a follow on from her Autumn design, The Grape Thieves, which featured in issue 68. Look out as well in upcoming issues for the last two seasons, which will feature next year. I wanted to take the time…

Setting sail! I have finally finished my Spoondrift quilt from last years Block of the Month series, designed by Janet Clare. I made the quilt for my daughter and son-in-law who live on the south coast. My son-in-law runs an outdoor pursuits centre in Chichester harbour and my daughter works in coastal zone management, so the combination of sailing and wildlife themes were perfect for them. I asked my friend Trudi Wood, longarm quilter extraordinaire, to quilt it for me and she completed it with a fabulous ‘wind and wave’ design, which fits in perfectly. Christine, via email What a wonderful and fitting gift, Christine. We’re so happy you enjoyed the BOM! STASHBUSTING BEAUTY This is a quilt I made for my daughter. When I started it, I thought it was horrible, because I was…

white winter morning

“After I’d made the autumn-themed ‘The Grape Thieves’ quilt with William Morris prints for issue 68, I naturally started thinking about making a similar quilt for each of the remaining seasons (as you do!). This is the first, designed to evoke the chilly quiet of a walk in the woods through softly falling snow. With foundation paper pieced blocks and lots of appliqué, it’s not the quickest quilt to make, but I hope you’ll find it worth the effort! “As with The Grape Thieves, I’ve combined a selection of William Morris prints in a limited colour palette with an almost-plain background to help the snowflakes stand out. My Morris prints were taken from more than one collection, and the background is a Moda Grunge blender (I also think this design would…
