the home straight

YOU’RE HOLDING IN your hands our 11th issue for the year, November 2016, and you’ll have to admit that while the time has sped by, it’s mostly been a bumpy ride. We’ve survived a down economy, barely. Our rand has suffered under a topsy-turvy political landscape. The undercurrent of turmoil has had an effect on you the consumer, us the media and you can be darn sure the vehicle manufacturers and importers whose products we evaluate each month. Even so, we’ve managed to fold several frivolities into the fondue that is TopCar each month. I refer to provocative metal such as the new Nissan GT-R on our cover (and the very old one alongside), now faster than ever and with a newfound sumptuousness. For tactile purposes, we’ve assembled its predecessors,…

the disco 5 is here!

‘New Discovery will, from now on, represent the ‘leisure’ pillar in Land Rover’s new three-tier structure – with the next Defender occupying the gap left by the old Defender and the more agricultural outgoing Disco’– Gerry McGovern LAND ROVER DNA No mistaking the new Discovery for anything but an LR product. The company’s new design language features heavily, including that trademark stepped profile, which helps improve headroom for third-row passengers. New, softer curves obvious too. Tail heavy? We’ll reserve judgement until we see it in the flesh THE CABIN The interior features the same design-style as Discovery Sport but is more premium. It can be personalised too. Chief drawcard though is the space - it will seat 7 full-sized adults, says Land Rover, none of this 5+2 nonsense. We’ll see POWERTRAINS The engine line-up (for now)…

‘even the 911 must adjust’ porsche’s future, by the new boss

A possible bodystyle could be a 929 spun off the Panamera to recreate the 928. ‘It’s doable,’ says Blume THE UNVEILING OF a pure electric sports coupe and a 47-year-old appointed chairman of the board: September 2015’s events encapsulated the transformation reshaping Porsche. Now one year on, Oliver Blume is deep in the process of embedding his, and owner Volkswagen Group’s, progressive, ten-year vision into the heart of the company. ‘We are checking our strategy almost on a daily basis,’ says Blume. ‘To meet future challenges, the group and its brands must invest heavily in a broad array of technologies, develop fresh product without abandoning core model ranges, and consistently rethink and evolve their roles in a fast-changing landscape where differentiation will be increasingly difficult to achieve.’ Blume forged his career during two…

in the moment flight of the navigator

01 ‘I don’t need to see’ ‘As a co-driver I don’t watch through the windscreen. I feel the car’s movement in my hips and my back and I know exactly where we stand – acceleration, braking, turn in – with my body. I don’t need to watch outside because my driver’s doing that, my job is to tell what’s coming next. My seat is so low in the car I can’t see much [anyway]…’ 02 ‘Timing is everything’ ‘You really need to focus to deliver your pacenotes at the right time to your driver. You don’t need to speak very fast, the thing is to have a good rhythm. If you speak too fast or too much, your driver will not understand you, or memorise what you are telling him.’ 03 ‘It’s like a…

first hybrid to be built in sa

It’s official. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W205) has become the first hybrid passenger car to be built on African soil. The East London plant is 1 of 4 factories in the world that will exclusively build the Merc C 350e for both local and international consumption. It’s a pretty big deal. Over the last decade E-mobility has become very important to Merc and the company firmly believes in the ethos of green mobility. As such 8 plug-in hybrids now comprise the range with a further 2 to be added in 2017. Three of these hybrids are now available to SA buyers: the C 350e, S 500e and GLC 500e. As for the locally-built C 350e, the car boasts seamless hybrid integration combining a 155kW/350Nm 2.0-litre 4cyl turbodiesel mill with a 60kW/340Nm…

I LEARNED A LOT about Esther Mahlangu and her traditional Ndebele motif art during my four years at Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT. Renowned globally for her detailed works, Mahlangu is famous in the automotive realm for her 1991 BMW 5 Series commission, transforming the car into an Ndebeleinspired piece of rolling art. It was such a hit that the relationship endured – most recently she got involved with the BMW personalisation programme Individual, transforming the cabin trim panels of the new 7 Series. ‘My heart was full of joy when BMW asked me again to paint for them.’ The process was a painstaking one: specialists at Individual oversaw the manufacturing of special white-stained, fine-wood trim, engineered to be the ‘blank canvas’ on which Mahlangu would work. Her hand-painted detailing was…
