snow queen

From the top of her silvery snowflake tiara to the sumptuous folds of her exquisite gown, Shannon’s snow queen design is breathtaking. Create the background for the snow queen’s natural landscape with large sections of whole cross stitches and fractionals, then this piece will really start coming together once you begin the backstitch. Adding her pretty features and definition to the dress, you’ll see it spring to life, with a liberal scattering of French knots and seed beads finishing it perfectly. We love the use of colour, with ice-toned beads, shimmering metallic and cool tones of stranded cotton set against a bold blue backdrop. It makes the perfect project with which to welcome winter! You will need Threads: Stranded cotton and metallic threads, as listed in the key Needle: Size 22 tapestry needle Fabric:…

joy to the world

Snow white thread on cashel linen is a gorgeous combination and the wooden hoop finish suits this Scandi style design perfectly. Look at the key and you’ll see Durene has only used cross stitch, backstitch and French knots for this piece – so nothing too tricky – but in some areas the backstitch creates a beautiful ‘pulled thread’ effect on the linen. It really wouldn’t look the same on aida, so try to stick to linen or evenweave if you can. The beauty of a design like this is that you can alter the whole look, just by changing the fabric or thread shade. Red cotton would look really festive on white fabric, or if you’re up for the challenge you might like to try metallic gold thread on black…
