Wildlife Ranching Magazine Issue 4 2018

In 2013, it was estimated that approximately 17 percent of land in South Africa make up the private wildlife industry. Value chains include: • Breeding, which includes high-value and plains game; • Hunting, which includes biltong and trophy hunting; • By-products, such as game-meat, leather products, horns and curios; • Ecotourism, such as photographic safaris, game viewing and trails. Wildlife Ranching magazine content is conceptualised and produced based on editorial pillars that represent the wildlife ranching industry value chains, with a focus on the issues that matter most. unity & collaboration for growth

A great deal has been spoken in the past about the importance of unity amongst the various sectors of the wildlife industry. However, very little was said especially in the media, about the importance for industry and Government to align their goals and make a unified approach towards achieving that. WRSA constitutes the largest collective of more than 2 000 commercial wildlife ranchers (landowners), businesses and individuals with an interest in commercial wildlife ranching. Wildlife ranchers conduct their activities from millions of hectares of agricultural property dispersed throughout South Africa. Two of the WRSA key strategic focus areas are to stimulate growth and create demand and to work together with all stakeholders to ensure future sustainability and success of the full wildlife industry. Our stakeholders automatically include the South African government, and…

eenheid & samewerking bring groei

publishing editor’s note

here is a word in South Africa that speaks about the fact that one T can’t exist in isolation as a human being. The word – ubuntu – stresses the importance of unity. Why is unity so important? Strength underlies unity, and whenever people act in unison their strength increases. The importance of unity can never be overvalued and is particularly meaningful when it comes to the sustainable future of wildlife in Africa. In our lead article ‘United we stand?’ Michael ’t Sas-Rolfes states that it is worth reflecting upon the current extent of unity within the wildlife ranching industry and among those who care about wildlife more generally. He challenges the industry by probing these questions: “Are we a society united, or one that is increasingly divided? And, if it is…

unity & collaboration

‘Unity’ is a positive word that conveys a need for working together, full stop. Generally, we use it loosely, calling for unity but not defining what we mean – and unless we do so, we are doomed to failure. If one consults the dictionary, it gives one the following synonyms for unity: ‘agreement’, ‘harmony’, ‘accord’, ‘unison’, ‘concord’ and ‘unanimity’ (the last being the highest degree of unity). The one antonym provided is ‘disarray’, which to my mind is a warning of what occurs when there is a lack of unity. ‘Chaos’ would be an even stronger consequence. The first written evidence of unity and the positive consequences thereof that I am able to find is the story of Moses leading the 12 tribes in their exodus from Egypt in about 1300 BC.…

eenheid & samewerking

‘Chaos’ sal ’n selfs erger gevolg wees.

With his large, sabre-like trophy, Jacques Malan’s young sable bull, Ninja, is a sight to behold. A son of the renowned breeding bull Monster, Ninja boasts a horn length of over 50", with a remarkable tip-to-tip spread of 32 ¼". Not quite six years old, Ninja will be up for sale at Stud Game Breeders auction on 1 September. “Ninja is a combination of sables from different areas,” says Malan. “He’s 76% Zambian and 17% southern, but he also has some Tanzanian blood in him. He has a really beautiful body shape and size – he’s a very promising youngster.” Monster is renowned for breeding several bulls over 50", indicative of his pre-potency ability and the quality one expects from a top breeding bull. “The latest trend with sables is to turn more animals…
