it’s a hull thing

When i was a kid, i went to the store and bought sneakers. I didn’t get sets of running shoes, basketball shoes, cross-training shoes or walking shoes. Just sneakers. And I was a die-hard Chuck Taylor fan. I had a pair of sneakers. ¶ These days, I have those cross-training shoes, boat sneakers, fishing sneakers, boat shoes, flip-flops, closed-toe boat sandals and more. I still have only the same two feet, but footwear has evolved to suit those hyperniches. If you are an enthusiast of those hyperniches, you find a need and a place for all the available offerings. ¶ I see a similar marketplace evolution when I look at hull designs these days. Growing up, I heard about the monohull and, once in a while, the catamaran. Within the…

60' LENGTH OVERALL 35'1" MAXIMUM BEAM Sunreef has announced its newest model, the 60 Sunreef Power Eco. The power catamaran will have more than 738 square feet of solar panels covering the yacht’s hull sides, superstructure and curved areas. Sunreef says its panels, which the builder produces in-house, generate 13 kWp and have a peak performance of 24 percent. The Eco’s solar panels weigh about 3.96 pounds for every 10.7 square feet, while the builder says many competing solar panels are far heavier. As with most things on boats, the reduced weight translates into better overall performance. Accommodations are for 12 guests in six athwartships staterooms, with room for four crew in two cabins forward. Stay tuned for more. READER FEEDBACK Looking for photos and yacht news? a world of inspiration

CAPT. DAYYAN ARMSTRONG got the call in June 2019. It was two weeks before he and his stepbrother, Capt. Ross Beane, were scheduled to start running that summer’s charters from the Sailing Collective, the New York City-based travel company they founded in 2011. A book publisher in Berlin had checked out the photos and journal entries on their website. The publisher was really taken with the descriptions of all the places they’d taken clients, sailing aboard bareboats worldwide. ¶ “They said, ‘Hey guys, you do something cool,’” Armstrong recalls. “‘Would you like to write a book?’” ¶ They started writing in September 2019, right after the summer charter season in the Mediterranean, and finished the book three months later, ahead of the winter charter season in the Caribbean. Their idea…

for the onboard bar

WHISTLEPIG in Vermont has released the Boss Hog VII: Magellan’s Atlantic. The limited-edition rye whiskey ($499) is aged for 17 years in American oak and then finished in rare Spanish oak, followed by a second finish in South American teakwood casks. The name is inspired by the first recorded circumnavigation. ¶ “We have experimented South American teakwood on just a handful of barrels in the past, and both this and the new Spanish oak are uncommon in the whiskey world,” says Meghan Ireland, WhistlePig’s maturation chemist. “It’s been the least predictable and most intensive edition of the Boss Hog to date, but well worth the trials and effort.” ¶ Each bottle comes in a gift box with a collectible pewter topper depicting Ferdinand Magellan as a pig in traditional Spanish…

wooden boats wb27

24'11" LENGTH OVERALL 8'7" MAXIMUM BEAM INSPIRED BY BENTLEY: WOODEN BOATS WB27 When the owner of the Sanlorenzo 52Steel KD wanted a custom tender, he turned to Italy’s Wooden Boats. The Viareggio-based builder had just produced a bespoke WB27 limousine tender based on the styling of Venetian water taxis. KD’s owner wanted a tender inspired by the automotive world. The yard produced this WB27, which has fully working taillights taken from a Bentley Mulsanne. The hardtop is built in two sections that can be removed to create an open boat that feels like a convertible sports car. The Mercury Diesel 3.0 TDI engine can reportedly push the hull to a top speed of 36 knots. Inside the guest space, the gray leather upholstery is taken from Bentley’s palette of materials.…

adventure tender

TED FONTAINE designed the Surfari 50 sport-utility tender to tackle rough waters en route to surf spots, secluded beaches or weekend getaways. The 52-foot, 11-inch boat’s hull, deck and superstructure are built using e-glass, low-viscosity resin and carbon-fiber reinforcements. Its space-saving, D-shaped sponson tubes are filled with air and foam, and its triple (or quadruple) 400 hp Mercury Verado outboards with joystick control reportedly deliver a cruising speed of 36 knots and a 50-knot top speed. • Whom It’s For: This boat is for adventurous yachtsmen who want to get to the action fast, and for racing teams that need to transfer manpower and materials quickly. • Picture This: Tomorrow morning’s surf forecast looks great for New York’s Montauk Point Lighthouse, but you’re in New York City. No matter: The…
