in-between moments

IT WAS A RAINY MORNING OFF SAVONA, ITALY, BUT I DIDN’T CARE. The water’s rich blue-green hue seemed even more intoxicating contrasted against the dark, nearly black sky. I was in the master stateroom belowdecks watching that water pass by the hull, rain bouncing off the sea’s surface like a gaggle of kids on a trampoline. I was completely present in the sublime moment. ¶ It’s a rare thing to feel that way. For me, it happens most often on the water. And it’s a feeling that I’m happy to chase. ¶ Sometimes, it takes some doing to get there. I took a trip Down Under once that was a Homer-worthy odyssey: New York to California. California to New Zealand. New Zealand to Australia. After landing in Brisbane, I went…

90'2" LENGTH OVERALL 45'9" MAXIMUM BEAM Alva Yachts has announced its Ocean Eco 90 power catamaran. The yacht is offered with an all-electric propulsion system or a hybrid diesel-electric setup. Power for the all-electric model is two 500 kW gearless electric drives and two 100-kilovolt-ampere DC generators. A hydrogen fuel cell with storage tanks is optional. The hybrid version has two 250 kW electric drives and two 611 hp diesel engines. The builder says cruise speed ranges from 8 to 10 knots with a top-end speed range of 15 to 16 knots. super sportfisher

VRIPACK YACHT design and Royal Huisman, both in the Netherlands, have unveiled a few tantalizing details about Project 406—which is being built as the world’s largest sport-fishing yacht. ¶ Project 406 has a length overall of 171 feet. That means the vessel will dwarf not only the most sizable 80-to 105-footers from well-known sport-fish builders—such as Viking Yachts, Bayliss Boatworks and Jim Smith Tournament Boats—but also the behemoth one-off sport-fishers such as the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company, 130-foot McMullen & Wing Mea Culpa and 129-foot Yachting Developments Lanakai. As the team at Royal Huisman expressed this reality about Project 406, “This groundbreaking creation will be, by some distance, the largest, most luxurious and individual true sport-fish yacht in the world.” ¶ Aqua Marine is the owner’s representative on the project,…

welcome to cloud 9

CLOUD 9 IS THE FIRST HULL of the Sanlorenzo 62Steel to be delivered, with Hull No. 2 on track for delivery to its owner this fall and Hull No. 3 under construction with a completion date of early 2023. ¶ For a sense of proportion about this 202-foot yacht, consider that the covered beach club shown above spans just shy of 1,000 square feet, with the foldout terraces adding another 430 square feet. Inside, the upper-deck owners’ stateroom connects to a 1,500-square-foot outdoor relaxation space with its own pool. (Tenders are kept in amidships garages to port and starboard, to free up the guest spaces at the bow and stern.) ¶ Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini were tapped to create the yacht’s interior decor, which features Jerusalem stone in the…

adaptable addition

THE SWAN SHADOW, designed by Jarkko Jämsén, is the first power yacht Nautor’s Swan has built in its 55-year history. The Swan Shadow has a plumb bow, strakes and a twin-stepped, V-shaped hull. Power is triple 225 to 350 hp outboards. A stern platform adjusts vertically to serve as a passerelle or swim platform, and onboard setups can focus on fishing, guests or open stowage. Owners can spec a T-top or long-top roof; the latter can be ordered with telescoping pillars and movable glass to create a convertible, limousine-style abovedeck space. Top speed is reportedly 55 knots. Whom It’s For: The Swan Shadow is designed as a tender for sailing yachts or for those seeking a powerboat infused with Nautor’s Swan DNA. Picture This: You and your crew just won a windward-leeward…

equal measure

SYMMETRY. BALANCE. THESE TWO WORDS popped into my head as I looked over the Sunseeker Predator 55 Evo. ¶ The design starts with the set of teak steps flanking the express cruiser’s tender garage, which handles a Williams Turbojet 325 and leads to the cockpit’s teak sole. A transom bench seat is on centerline and continues the equilibrium theme. Just forward is a settee, and a folding teak table is between the two seating areas, creating an alfresco dining space. A bulkhead window to port flips up on a strut and connects guests in the salon with those outside. Open the cockpit door, and the main deck becomes an indoor-outdoor entertaining area. ¶ Entering through the salon door to starboard, there is a U-shaped settee immediately to port that accommodates…
