it’s true what they say, the right scent can f lood you with memories— lightning-fast and in picture-perfect detail. Shamari Garrett, 21, always loved makeup, but Alaskan jobs in the field are few and far between. Then a chance drive by the Ulta store in Anchorage presented an opportunity: Her boyfriend pointed it out and suggested she apply for a job there—she did and ended up landing an aesthetician position. In 1999 Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was recovering from cancer. Her late husband urged her to find a personal trainer, and she found me. She was determined as all getout, and we started building a regimen. After several months of our twice-weekly workouts, her bone density began to increase. Her doctor told me: “I’m not sure what you’re doing, but keep doing it.” Keep doing it we have. We work out twice a week, usually in the gym at the Supreme Court. Sometimes we chat, but mostly we just get to it. We listen to PBS NewsHour, and she gives it her all. Stacy Brown-Philpot could have stayed in The Dream Job: “I had been at Google when it grew from 1,000 employees to 50,000,” says Brown-Philpot, 41. “I had this corner office, and everybody was like, ‘This is amazing.’ I felt comfortable, extremely comfortable, until I [realized], I’m supposed to be taking chances. The car accident was more than a decade ago. The leg fracture has long since healed. The visible bruises and scars are all gone. But the patient in my office tells me that her pain is still there, and this is something we discuss at every visit.
