Hanno the Navigator
Carthaginian C.5th century BCE
Hanno was a Carthaginian explorer who at some point during the 5th century departed on a voyage with a fleet of 60 ships to explore the west coast of Africa. Here, with the 30,000 men and women under his command, he founded several colonies and along the way had a number of adventures, including encountering what he believed to be savage, hairy humans. Terming these creatures ‘gorillai’, they were in fact gorillas. Some of the things he mentions in his writings remain mysterious, such as a large volcano he referred to as the “Chariot of the Gods”, which historians have yet to identify.
