“I’ve met some of the great soap villains!” It’s EastEnders’ turn to campaign for your votes in the Inside Soap Awards this week, and we spent a lovely day with some of the show’s brightest stars for our special feature on p44. Everyone in the cast is very proud of their drama this year – especially the heartbreaking knife-crime plot – and they even gave us a few hints about what’s going to happen as evil Stuart’s vendetta against the Carters grows ever-more twisted. On that topic, I was very pleased to discover that actor Ricky Champ, who plays Stuart so brilliantly, proved my rule on soap baddies. Hollyoaks worked with local charities to make sure the details of Imran’s abuse were true to life. As well as Sefton Women’s & Children’s Aid, the show got advice from Family Lives, who were pleased to help it raise awareness of the issue. “We frequently receive calls to our helpline from parents who are scared of their child, often feel ashamed and embarrassed, and don’t know what to do,” said a spokesperson when the plot launched. “Raising awareness of the prevalence of child-on-parent violence is key to enabling parents to speak out about it and find support.
