The IFP has called on KwaZulu-Natal police to step up their efforts in ridding the province of illegal guns, warning public trust in the SAPs’ ability to provide protection was waning.
IFP Member in the Provincial Legislature (MPL) and spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison, Blessed Gwala, said the killing of four people in a tavern at Sweetwaters, in Pietermaritzburg, also demonstrated a weak crime intelligence capacity among the police.
“As the IFP, we have raised the issue of incompetence on the part of the Crime Intelligence Unit on numerous occasions. The IFP maintains the Unit has a responsibility to be on the ground, gathering information. First, to prevent atrocities from taking place, and secondly, to arrest those who plan to commit these crimes,” said Gwala.
