THE hybrid Range Rover isn’t a new invention, because there was a diesel-electric version in the not-too-distant past, but this fresher petrol-electric plug-in example is a far more convincing product. However, unlike the BMW here, the P400e uses a petrol four cylinder. Unfortunately, this choice of engine loses some appeal when you put it next to the six-cylinder unit in the 7 Series. MOTORISTS across the UK should lobby the Government for a national diesel scrappage scheme, the Mayor of London has told Auto Express. In an exclusive interview, Sadiq Khan said that drivers who bought diesel cars under old tax regimes “did the right thing”, but it was time to switch to electric. “What I don’t want you to do is go back to petrol”, he added. In 2001, the sitting Labour Government offered reduced road tax for vehicles with low emissions, effectively encouraging drivers to buy diesel. “One thing that I’ve been lobbying the Government to do over the last few years is to recognise that poor families, small businesses and charities listened to the advice given by previous Governments to buy diesel. THE hedgehog is the latest animal to join the UK’s road-sign landscape, after the Department for Transport unveiled new warnings designed to alert drivers of the potential for small animals to be on the road. As well as protecting wildlife, the signs are intended to keep road users safe. In 2017 alone, 629 people were injured and four killed in accidents involving animals other than horses. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said the new designs would make roads safer while helping “our precious small wild mammal population to flourish”. The signs warn drivers that otters, squirrels, badgers and other small animals may also be on the road. The story dates back to 1934 and the brand’s early forays into Grand Prix racing, and uncovering its origins offers a fascinating insight into the firm’s racing heritage. In a move to prevent an engine arms race, which saw capacities ever-increasing as the manufacturers hunted for more power, rules were introduced stipulating that GP cars must weigh no more than 750kg. Just ask the 30 million people who’ve bought a Passat since it was launched in 1973. So it’s definitely a good thing that the fresh 2019 Passat’s sturdy yet sharply pressed lines are virtually untouched. Similarly the engine range is the same, but better. There are four diesel motors, with power ranging from 118bhp to 237bhp; the three petrols are all turbocharged and run from a 148bhp 1.5-litre to a 2.0-litre unit that offers either 188bhp or 268bhp. The luxury limousine is considered to be the best in the business, so the brand’s latest model has a lot to live up to. Of course, Mercedes has form when it comes to large luxury SUVs, with its GL and later GLS predecessors, and in many ways this version achieves jacked-up executive-class travel better than any of its ancestors. While the previous GLS architecture could be traced back to the 2005 M-Class, the latest model shares a platform with the new GLE. It therefore starts with a lighter, more rigid structure – one that can accommodate the brand’s latest driver-assistance systems and infotainment. But it’ll need to have the talent to back up its looks. Peugeot 508 SW Connected 3D Nav Standard Key features: Nav, digi dash, phone tech GT Line trim’s 10-inch screen is big, but the second-generation i-Cockpit setup works in a similar way to other Peugeots and boasts similar features. The hi-res graphics aren’t quite as sharp as the Skoda’s, but are better than the Mazda’s, while the nav and phone connectivity work well. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard and are quicker to respond than Peugeot’s native set-up. IT’S easy to spot the latest 7 Series, because BMW has enlarged the grille significantly. The front end now matches with that of the new X7 SUV in its design language. Bold would be a kind way to describe it, although the Range Rover is imposing as well. Neither car is exactly subtle. Under the skin, BMW has thrown out the previous plug-in 7 Series’ four-cylinder motor and installed a 3.0-litre straight six. It might seem an odd move, but for buyers at this end of the market, luxury is the name of the game – and a larger, smoother engine makes for a more refined experience. Refreshed looks, optimised performance and reduced running costs are all promised from the new car, which was showcased at last weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hours. Like all GT3-class machinery, it will be eligible for major endurance races such as the Spa, Nürburgring and Dubai 24 Hours, as well as numerous international and national GT series, including British GT.
