During this time of political polarization, there has been an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books. PBSBooksisproudtohighlight banned, restricted, and challenged books by spotlighting them and their authors during the month of October. The American Library Association (ALA) designated October 1–7, 2023, as Banned Books Week, highlighting current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools and celebrating the free exchange of ideas.
According to the ALA, “Of the recorded 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.” Since its inception in 2015, PBS Books has been dedicated to showcasing the voices of people from historically marginalized backgrounds and supports the freedom to seek and express ideas.
