The linchpin for all layer operations is the Layer Dock. There, layers can be created, rearranged, deleted, named, marked, joined and more. With GIMP 2.10 the Layer Dock has become quite complex. Images can contain many layers, which are then grouped together and often only partially visible. Transparent layers (layer name in normal font) and opaque layers (layer name in bold) can be mixed and, if necessary, converted into each other with the alpha channel.
In the Lock section, GIMP allows individual aspects of layers to be specifically locked. In this way, layers can be protected from being painted over, moved or, in the case of transparent layers, having changes made to the alpha channel.
