Telecoms regulator Ofcom has said broadband providers should be forced to tell customers what their best deals are when their initial contracts are coming to an end, as part of its push to make sure loyal customers don’t pay more than they need to. These notifications would include special discounts available only to new customers. Ofcom also said companies should email their deals to customers once a year, so they are regularly told about cheaper packages they could switch to. As well as broadband, the new rules would apply to mobile, landline phone and pay-TV contracts. These proposals strengthen Ofcom’s existing proposals to protect customers whose contract is coming to an end. For the first time more than half the world’s population has access to the internet, the United Nations has said. Around 3.9 billion people are online – 51.2 per cent of the global population, rising from 48 per cent in 2017. Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of the UN agency for information and communication technologies (ITU), called the milestone “an important step towards a more inclusive global information society”. However, he acknowledged that “far too many people around the world are still waiting to reap the benefits of the digital economy”. TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT Create a virtual Home button on your iPad if the physical one stops working My three-year old iPad Mini 2 still works perfectly – except for one crucial thing: the all-important Home button only worked intermittently for a while and has now stopped functioning altogether. WINDOWS 10 Use Edge’s new dictionary One of the new features added to Windows 10’s Edge browser in the October 2018 Update is a dictionary that you can use when browsing online articles in Reading View, or while reading ebooks and PDF files. You first need to switch on the feature, so click the three dots at the top right of the browser, Settings at the bottom, then scroll to the bottom of the section that opens. What is it? The third and latest version of HTTP (hypertext transport protocol - the first of many acronyms and abbreviations here, so please bear with us), which is the system web browsers use to fetch web pages from servers. It should lead to a faster experience when browsing the web. Why’s that? Because it’s very QUIC. That’s Google’s name for its Quick UDP Internet Connections system, which it started developing in 2013, and suggested three years later as a successor to HTTP/2. It cuts the number of times computers need to request data from a server when downloading information via HTTP. Fake online chatbots Chatbots are used by many companies these days to provide automated answers to basic customer queries. However, security company WatchGuard (www.snipca.com/30082) has warned that in 2019 fake chatbot windows could be inserted into hacked websites, including online banking services. Using advanced artificial intelligence (AI), it’s feared these could fool people into providing personal information (such as passwords or account numbers), or may offer links to dangerous websites and downloads. Protect yourself: Be sceptical when using any form of online chat. Most official websites never ask for personal information. You’ll soon receive an automatic £8 a day in compensation for loss of landline or broadband, after Openreach agreed a scheme with BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Zen Internet. It will apply only if the fault hasn’t been fixed during the first two days. There will also be £25 compensation if an engineer does not arrive on schedule, or cancels within 24 hours, plus £5 a day for new services not starting on time. Plusnet and EE have already suggested they will also sign up to the voluntary plan, which is due to come into force in early 2019. WATCH OUT FOR… Battery-draining Android apps What’s the threat? Criminals infiltrated the Google Play Store with apps that – once installed – started clicking repeatedly on online adverts, draining your device’s battery. Through this scam, known as ‘clickfraud’, the criminals running the adverts received money every time they are clicked. Researchers at antivirus firm Sophos discovered 22 apps carrying out the scam. In total these had been downloaded more than two million times. Half of these downloads were for just one app, Sparkle Flashlight, which turns your phone’s LED camera into a torch. Find misspelled ancestor names No matter how diligently you plot someone’s life, key pieces of information can remain elusive. Perhaps the person mysteriously vanishes from one census only to reappear in the next. BT has upgraded its Wi-Fi street kiosks to make them easier to use for people with hearing and sight problems, though has been forced to close some in London because they had been taken over by drug dealers. The company’s InLink kiosks (pictured), which are replacing over 1,000 payphones across the UK, provide free Wi-Fi at speeds up to 1Gbps (1,000Mbps). They also let you make free 30-second phone calls, charge your phone, and show local maps on a touchscreen. The kiosks now have BT’s next-generation text (NGT) service, which lets callers type the words they want to communicate. Astreet in the Gloucestershire village of Bamfurlong has been named as the slowest for broadband in the annual survey of UK speeds from comparison site uSwitch. Homes in Greenmeadows Park in the village averaged just 0.14Mbps, nearly 1,900 times slower than the fastest street, Abdon Avenue in Birmingham, where speeds hit 265Mbps. This was much higher than the second fastest, Redwell Grove in West Malling, Kent, which averaged 178Mbps (see the full results at www.snipca.com/30099). At 0.14Mbps it would take more than 102 hours to download a two-hour HD film on Netflix. At 265Mbps this would take less than four minutes. To check quickly if yours have been taken, visit Have I Been Pwned? (https://haveibeenpwned.com, HIBP?), as we’ve recommended many times. Spybot Identity Monitor shares the same database of leaked passwords as HIBP?, but provides a more thorough, long-term method of monitoring your accounts. I have grave concerns about the police letting the public report incidents to a ‘chatbot’ (‘Question of the Fortnight’, Issue 543, pictured). When you report a criminal incident it should feel like you’re performing a social duty. You should do so with care and diligence. You should be respectful of the seriousness of the process. It’s much harder to uphold these standards when you’re simply typing words for a robot to read. I foresee two problems. One, the public will abuse the system by exaggerating what they’ve seen or simply lie. A chatbot won’t be able to ask the kind of nuanced questions that could expose lies. In the good old days, children went to school to learn. Nowadays, they go to school to have their data stolen – at least they do if they were taught by Darren Harrison. Mr Harrison was suspended from his position as deputy head of Isleworth Town Primary School in west London after it was discovered he had uploaded personal data about pupils taken from his previous schools in Richmond.
