A pple has announced to developers that it plans to increase App Store prices around the world. It will make for uncomfortable reading given the cost of living crisis. The change will affect apps and in-app purchases in various nations, including Chile, Japan, Pakistan, and Vietnam, plus any country that uses the euro as a currency. Apple did not specify how much prices are set to increase, but said the new fees will come into effect “as early as 5 October, 2022”. Developers can price their apps according to set tiers, and it is those tiers that are changing. W hen Apple launched the iPhone 14 range, it kept the non-Pro models on last year’s A15 chip. That looks set to continue with the iPhone 15, with a new report claiming Apple will improve the process used to make the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 chips – but not those in the regular iPhone 15. Right now, iPhone chips are made with TSMC’s first-generation three-nanometre (3nm) process, known as N3. According to Nikkei Asia, Apple will shift to TSMC’s second-generation N3E process for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max next year. That should mean improved performance and power efficiency, the report claims. The non-Pro models will not get this upgrade, though, meaning a regular iPhone 15 chip (which could be the A16) will stick with N3. As…

APP OF THE MONTH When Apple announced Continuity Camera at WWDC, it seemed to ‘Sherlock’ an app called Camo, which also lets you use an iPhone as a webcam. Now, Camo has struck back with a major update. Camo now offers a variable frame rate setting, letting you tweak video from 15fps up to 60fps. It also packs in video stabilisation, which is ideal if you get camera wobble from using a standing desk or a mechanical keyboard, or if you just type heavily. Elsewhere, there’s a smart zoom feature that uses a higher-resolution video feed when cropping in. That means it relies less on digital zoom, resulting in better image quality. FROM I nmany ways, the iPhone 14 Pro is the best iPhone out there. It has a bunch of fresh new features, and is the first (along with the Pro Max) iPhone in five years without the notch (it has something new!), while an Always-On display, improved adaptive-refresh-rate screen, and pixel binning for photography finally bring the iPhone 14 Pro series into alignment with its Android competitors. It’s worth noting that Apple doesn’t ramp things up quite so much on most of the new features. We get more zoom options on the cameras, but not greater zoom range. We’ve got pixel binning, but at four pixels-per-large-pixel, not, say, nine, as on Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra. We consider the new Dynamic Island to be the biggest innovation. It’s a clever way…

> Cupertino is making a big deal of the bands you can choose with the Apple Watch Ultra. (Note: you can use any 44/45mm strap you own or like the look of, but you have to pick one of the following at purchase). We tested the Watch Ultra with the Oceanic Band and we can’t say we love it. It looks a bit, well, Lego in its design, although it’s sturdy as heck and is designed to stay put during ‘high speed watersports’. The Trail Loop is a simple slip-on and velcro strap, with elastene for comfort. We wish we could have tried it, as it felt comfortable in our tests, but it wasn’t to be. W hen it comes to greatsounding wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) have knocked it out of the park. Designed to work seamlessly across your Apple devices, they offer fast pairing, useful features and incredible sound for the money, despite costing £249. The changes Apple has made don’t look radical on the outside – the earbuds and case look largely the same as the previous generation – but there are differences. For one, Apple has changed the position of the external microphones, so they now take up two separate housings on the outside of the earbuds. A lthough there’s no major change in Photos, lots of smaller improvements like finding duplicates and batch editing make it even better to use. 1 Eliminate duplicates When Photos analyses images in your library, it looks for duplicates with contents that appear identical even if files have different formats or metadata. Any it finds are listed in a new section in its sidebar, so you can check them and accept its offer to merge them into one. 2 Display in HDR If your Mac’s display supports high dynamic range with HDR, enable Photos’ Settings > General > View Full HDR so that your display will be automatically adjusted to show images in HDR. 3 Batch edit images When you have a batch of images to which you want to apply…

U ntilrelatively recently, if you wanted to listen to or buy music on your Mac, rent or buy a movie, or subscribe to a podcast, you would head for the same app: iTunes. Now, you have three apps to navigate, depending on what you want to do. Apple working on auto Shazam > Future iPhones could pause music and videos when you look away, according to a new Apple patent. This would be done with the goal of saving battery life on your device. The patent also details how Apple could enable new features based on when you are paying attention, such as by activating Shazam if your devices think you are bobbing your head to music (which may be detected by AirPods). Some iPhones already have attention-aware features, such as Face ID requiring you to look at your screen. But this patent suggests Apple is pondering how it could take the tech further. New security updates Rapid Security Response updates are a new way for Apple to push urgent patches to address important vulnerabilities in macOS and its apps like Safari. Instead of requiring a large installer and restarting macOS, these are applied without fuss, and can be removed if needed. Ensure System Settings > Software Update lets your Mac receive and install them. 1 Use Touch ID if possible Using Passkeys is easier with Touch ID authentication.
